Desmond crashed on the Island during a solo sailing race around the world, sponsored by Charles Widmore's foundation. After refusing Widmore's bribe to stay away from his daughter Penny, Desmond entered the race to prove his worth. When he arrived in L.A. to train for the race, Desmond encountered Libby, who donated her late husband's boat Elizabeth for him to use in the race.
