Wayne Janssen was Kate's biological father, though he was likely unaware of this. He beat Kate's mother Diane, was an alcoholic, and made sexual advances toward Kate (which she vehemently rebuffed). He was killed by Kate when she blew up his house in 2001. ("What Kate Did")
Possible channel through Sawyer on the Island
While tending an injured, delirious Sawyer in the Swan station, Kate played a record of the song "Walkin' After Midnight" by Patsy Cline and told the sleeping Sawyer that she thought she saw a horse outside. Sawyer began to mumble, and as Kate leaned in to hear better, Sawyer grabbed her by the neck and said, "You killed me. Why did you kill me?" ("What Kate Did")
Trivia
- Jansenism is a branch of Catholic theology emphasizing original sin, human depravity, the necessity of divine grace, and predestination.
- At the Lost panel at the 2009 Comic-Con, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse screened a video clip featuring John Walsh hosting the television series America's Most Wanted. He states that Wayne did not in fact die in the house explosion, but instead that his assistant Ryan Milner was killed in an explosion at Janssen's office after Kate had supposedly cut a gas line hours earlier. It is unknown if this video is canonical, but it is completely unlike the scene depicted in "What Kate Did" and does not make sense in the context of the plot of the series as we know it.
