Regarding the book Locke gave Ben entitled "Valis" (a story in which an ancient, mechanical intelligence orbiting the earth has been guiding people’s thoughts), Locke instructs him that he "might catch something you missed the first time around."

This is an allusion, on the part of the writers, that Ben does experience "time looping" and HAS lived through island events before, perhaps explaining why he always seems one step in front of everybody.
