Wanted pages
Hi Kevin, is it possible to change the parameters on the wanted pages list so 1 link pages don't show up anymore? I know it used to be a minimum of two links. Also, is it possible to make it only count main articles rather than talk pages? Thanks, --Nickb123 (Talk) 16:53, 12 May 2007 (PDT)
adult language in high-traffic articles
Hi,
There is an issue with adult language on the site. The term "mindfuck" which used to reside in its own adult-marked article is now being applied as a "literary term" to some of the most heavly trafficed articles on this wiki. Those articles include most of the articles for recent episodes. When I started to notice it tonight, it had spread to 15 articles.
I dont think this issue can be dealt with by the sysops because a number of them are vocal advocates for the use and application of the term in Lostpedia. Those who are not advocates are unlikely to challenge those who are.
I think there needs to be a decision about the direction this site is going to take in terms of adult language on the high-traffic articles. I would suggest at a minimum that adult language warnings have to go on the articles. I'm no prude about language, but going down the path that seems to be starting is likely to really hurt this site.
Thank you for reading Dharmatel4 01:07, 17 May 2007 (PDT)
I think we need a new name instead for mindfuck. Perhaps "mindwarp"? This is the only bad language that appears around here though. --Blueeagleislander 01:29, 17 May 2007 (PDT)
- I haven't completely formed an opinion on the term. I do like Jabberwork's suggestion about linking to the article as Mindf*ck. --Admin 17:16, 23 May 2007 (PDT)

unethical behavior by sysop
There was a proposal to delete a controversial article mindfuck. The proposal to delete was made around May 5th. At least two sysops including Jabberwock talk contribs email were strongly against the proposal.
As of yesterday, 21 users expressed opinions in favor of deletion agianst 8 opposed. In spite of the overwhelming vote in favor of getting rid of the article, none of the sysops would make a decision to get rid of it.
Today Jabberwock talk contribs email moved the discussion without comment into an archive. When pressed on what he had done, he admitted that he personally determined that 21-8 was not a consensus and terminated the proposal. His behiavior is unethical for the following reasons:
1) He had a strong personal stake in the proposal (opposing it). For him to decide to end it is a conflict of interest.
2) He ignored the consensus of the Lostpedia community.
3) Rather than come out and terminate the discussion openly, he attempted to hide the dicussion in an archive and put nothing in that archive to indicate that he had personally decided to reject the proposal.
4) He tells the user community that "it's not a vote and there are no ballots". But if thats true, I would like like to know by what authority a single sysop gets to make a decision against the wishes of the user community. If the sysops as a group have decided something, they should stand up and say what they did.
The bottom line is that a sysop with a very strong view about a proposal should not be making final decisions on their own about that proposal. And if decisions are made, that should be made in the open. Dharmatel4 16:35, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- SysOps are appointed to make decisions on behalf of the community as a whole. The discussion was closed because after a good period for discussion, a consensus on what to do, delete/rename and a suitable name if we were to rename it, wasn't reached. The contents of the article itself is sound, there are no grounds for deletion based upon contents, and no deletion will occur when the content is sound but people disagree with the title. If people find the article's title offensive then that is each person pregogative, however if the content of the article is sound, and the majority of the sysops believe that the removal of an article would be against the best interests of Lostpedia, then deleting an article based on title alone is nothing short of foolhardy. An acceptable replacement title, which summises the genre point being made hasn't been found, and until that point the article does not warrant any major aleration. Plkrtn talk contribs email 17:03, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
1) If sysops didn't take an opinion in such matters then no maintenance would ever get done. 2) Not true, I did take into account the opinions of of the community when I closed the discussion as "no consensus". The discussion had been open for some time and it was going nowhere. At least six other sysops agreed that it should be kept, but considering there there was a substantial number of editors that favored deletion the outcome was "no consensus". 3) The deletion banner was removed on 5/10 and I only archived the old discussion today since the page was very long and there was another current discussion regarding the renaming of the page. Nothing was hidden. The banner on the top of the page clearly states the results of previous deletion nominations and refers users to previous discussions on the matter. 4) Deletion/Merge/etc has always been done in this manner and the Job List stating it as a "vote" was incorrect. It has been updated. The reason it's not a vote per se is because we carefully examine the opinions of other editors and they are also weighed against the person making the contribution and whether or not they actually give reasons for their recommendation. A user that has recently registered and makes a comment of only "delete" with their signature does not have much bearing into the final decision. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 17:16, 23 May 2007 (PDT)
- Dharmatel4, I don't believe it was unethical of Jabberwock to come to the conclusion "No Consensus", just because he endorsed it. I have absolutely no doubt that he would have deleted it even if he personally disagreed with it, had there been a clear consensus in his opinion. If you believe that sysops should *never* make a final decision in articles that they comment on, then let's discuss as a potential policy for Lostpedia. Do you believe this has been a problem with other articles? --Admin 17:37, 23 May 2007 (PDT)

I see that most, if not all, pictures here are screenshots from TV broadcasts. I was wondering if that's because you have some predilection for those, for whatever reason. SysOps on the Spanish Lostpedia
Hi, man!
I'm Calick, from the Spanish Lostpedia, and one of its more important editors.
These last months our wiki has experienced a rebirth and a high increase of its numbers of articles thanks to me and other members who have taken the new control of our wiki. However, we have not complete control, because we are not SysOps (the original administrators probably were gone, leaving the page abandoned, or maybe they never existed...).
What I'm asking to you, is there any way to become and Admin based on the qualities a SysOp must have, no matter that I am from another Lostpedia? We have no idea how to become an Admin or a SysOp, and we need to take control of some activities, specially against some recent vandalism actions. I know I haven't done as much as you and sure here I wouldn't deserve the right of what I'm asking for, but the Spanish Lostpedia is smaller by the time, and I've done a huge work as an editor and controller.
Please, if you can help me and my partners, we'll be very grateful to you.
Bye!

Today in Lost History
On the main page, Today in Lost History, is behind a day. Not sure if this falls under your "jurisdiction", but it seems logical to tell you. As I type this, it's 11:23 PM in US Central time zone, meaning nowhere in the world is on the day Sept. 29 (either Sept. 30 or Oct. 1), but today in Lost History is displaying events from Sept. 29. Hello. I'm a contributor of the French version of Lostpedia and I just found an extension that would ne nice for every version of Lostpedia : [2]. It would allow to make images clickable and going to an other page than image description. Images maps could also be used for World locations. If you could install this extension it would be very great. As a last word, it seems that it dosn't work in a template so there is some possible patches : [3] (it should also correct <gallery> in templates I think). Best regards. I would really appreciate if you could install this extension. Links from pictures would be then be no more headaches... Thanks a lot. Wyz 08:20, 9 October 2008 (PDT)

Problems with templates on the german lostpedia
Hello,
I'm one of the Admins of the german lostpedia. We have some problems with templates, if there are to many of them, they're shown as links (for example: template:ep instead of "Left Behind"). You can see it here or here. Can you help us? -- Clark Taylor 04:45, 5 March 2008 (PST)
- I'm sorry, but the problem we have, is still there and I have no idea, were it came from. Could it be, that some settings in DefaultSetting.php (or some non-settings in the LocalSettings.php file) averting more than 40 templates per page? (Somewhere in this file I found this: $wgMaxTemplateDepth=40, could it be the reason) -- Clark Taylor 13:18, 30 March 2008 (PDT)
- I found the problem, our {{ep|...}} template was to big. So ... forget it.

Spoiler spammers
We've now had spammers putting major spoilers on multiple pages and flooding the recent changes list. It seems that no sooner is one caught, then another comes along with a new account. Is it possible to stop all new registrations until after the finale has aired? Otherwise the SysOps are just going to be chasing their tails. Thanks--TechNic|talk|conts 15:38, 19 May 2008 (PDT)
- I hate to say it, but blocking new registrations or something similar may be necessary. The spoiler spammer from this morning looks like he just came back and did it all over again with a new account. Is there something that can be done? I'd hate to have to avoid the site completely until after the finale, but it's looking like it might be inevitable. --Minderbinder 15:48, 19 May 2008 (PDT)
- Have to agree with this, im usually a regular contributor but I have avoided lostpedia throughout season 4 due to the flash forward twist being revealed in the recent changes list here last year, cant wait to come back after the finale though!.. --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 15:51, 19 May 2008 (PDT)
- I seem to agree as well. I've seen three spoiler spammers within a very short amount of time. The recent changes list is not a good place to be come finale time. --CTS 17:50, 19 May 2008 (PDT)
- I recommend locking user creation for the next few days, or perhaps even editing. --Blueeagleislander 01:20, 20 May 2008 (PDT)

bring back the casualties petition
After the events that happend with deleting the 5 casualty articles, me and some other users started a petition for bringing those articles back on Lostpedia. If you share our opinion on this matter, please sign the "Save The Redshirts" section on my user page. If you want you could contact other users about this or create a "Save the redshirts" section on your user page, because the goal is to get as many users to sign the petition as possible along with 6 SysOps (Admins). I would appriciate a quick respond and a sign on either my user page or User:LostCloverfield42's page.
Actually, because you created Lostpedia your sign on the petition would mean a lot so I would like to ask for a support from you because I think bringing those articles back on Lostpedia is for this site's best interest.

Functionality
Greetings -
I'm sure you have a lot on your plate, but an idea occurred to me about character information,
I was looking at the Richard Alpert page and noticed a line that he had been in ten (?) episodes. I'm virtually certain that when we get to the first episode of the next season, that will change to eleven. Some poor slob <grin> is maintaining all those counts.
I wrote database code for over ten years, but I don't know anything about the internal structure of wiki. I'm new and still trying to remember when to use squiggles and when to use brackets!
Assuming there's the functionality in wiki, something like:
select COUNT(*) into {{episode_count|Richard Alpert}} from episode_pages where 'Richard Alpert' in CAST or 'Richard Alpert' in GUEST;
Like every thing else, there's development time, but....
Regards,
--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 18:31, 28 June 2008 (PDT)
- Hi Jim,
- Unfortunately, wiki structure is very flat. That fact that it's flat gives the userbase the ability to create any data structure they want without having to have a DBA design tables, and relations, etc.... That being said, there's no structured data like the data necessary to do this in our database. However, I agree that it would be handy. :) --Admin 02:05, 31 July 2008 (PDT)
Additional SysOps for the German Lostpedia
Hi there,
in the German Lostpedia we had a vote to choose some new SysOps, because the old ones aren't online that often any more. But at the moment it is necessary for us to have some admins who can change article names after the broadcast of the German language version of Lost. So we had a vote for additional SysOps you can see right here. The winners of this vote are Anis Ben Amor and me (DerAndre). So it would be great, if you make us SysOps of the German Lostpedia. On the french lostpedia we forgot to close a div on the Sitenotice. All the site was considered to be in the Sitenotice, everything was centered ! Wyz 04:30, 28 September 2008 (PDT)

- But you solved your problems in French Lostpedia now, right? So actually we don't need this extension any more. It is just causing problems - world wide. -- 12:31, 28 September 2008 (PDT)
- We DO need this feature. We made a template based on the template which I provided link above. Parserfunctions (eg if) return bad html tags, which are corrected by Tidy. For examples {{#if:{{{test|}}}<td>}} gives (without Tidy) <td>. If you don't want to correct the 10 articles/templates which are affected I read somewhere that you can activate it only for a localized function. Wyz 13:32, 28 September 2008 (PDT)

Userpage history deletion?
Hi Admin, I realize this may seem like a silly request, but would it be possible to have my userpage history deleted? I realized that I don't, at the moment, feel any need to have a profile, so I don't think I'm going to prod at it in any near future, and I thought having history of three random edits lying around was kind of pointless - that, and I'm not very comfortable with them in the first place. If you could delete the history (or the user page itself? I'm not sure, but I don't think that'll affect me as a user?), I'd be thankful.
Thank you very much in advance. Alpert 14:02, 21 October 2008 (PDT)
- Hi there, It is possible to delete the history. However, I've decided it's better not to make a deletion so I don't end up with 10,000 other users asking me to do the same thing! I hope you can understand. Thanks, --Admin 14:24, 21 October 2008 (PDT)

New Languages Page
Hi, Kevin. I've drawn up a new page for Lostpedia languages, which you can see here. I've added the list of administrators to each wiki, however, as unadept as I am at some foreign languages, I feel that I'm inevitably leaving some out. Is there a list of administrators that you could send me in order for me to complete my list? Thanks. -- Sam McPherson T C E 18:31, 13 November 2008 (PST)
- Hi Sam, The administrators of the wikis change from time to time.. It looks like you already found this, but the best way to get a current idea of who the administrators are is to check the MediaWiki Listuser function. Here is the example from the English Wiki http://en.lostpedia.com/index.php?title=Special:Listusers&username=&group=sysop&limit=30 The page looks really good. Thanks, --Admin 15:43, 16 November 2008 (PST)
- No problem. Thanks for your help. -- Sam McPherson T C E 18:36, 16 November 2008 (PST)
- You can do the same using wiki markup rather than hard coding the URL. Just tack on the group name similar to a sub-page. Special:Listusers/Sysop Jabberwock talk contribs email - 19:18, 16 November 2008 (PST)

Two things
- Hey, two things, the first one quick, the second one who knows.
- One, we have a new wiki sysop, and he needs proper supermoderator group status in the forums (user:CTS, also his forum name).
- Second, I got a message from a User:Wyz (who I notice has messaged you on other issues) from the Fr.lostpedia who noted: "I'm using a bot on the French Lostpedia and I recently found a bug I though was coming from the bot. But in fact it comes from lostpedia, look at this link. The mediawiki software is adding two extra lines on top, making bot inefficient. Can you have a look or transmit this message to the relevant person ?".
Requests summary
As Santa said I have several request still waiting an answer from you :
- #Request : an extension allowing click on images
- #Interwiki : enabling interwiki links for all lostpedia (not only English one)
- #Two things : find out why two extra lines are added on the exported text, it might reveal that there is something wrong in the mediawiki configuration (I solved the bot trouble with that by triming the loaded text)
Thanks in advance and best regards Wyz 02:05, 17 November 2008 (PST)

editcount/ec extension
Kevin,
I wasn't sure which of your sysops might handle this.
I my work as a sysop on Fringepedia.net, I've designed a box that dynamically displays the user's status in terms of number of edits. If implemented, it could replace all the "NNNN Edits" boxes currently in use on Lostpedia. The process uses three templates; User Status displays results using information from User Edits and User Count. You can examine the code by going to my user page on Fringepedia.net, here: [7]. Obviously, the graphic would have to be changed.
The only annoying aspect is that, although the display changes as expected when a boundary is crossed, the user page must be edited and saved to update the category.
Dennis, the owner of Fringepedia.net, has agreed to this.
The process requires the extension editcount or ec. That extension doesn't seem to be installed. Is it possible to get it installed?
Thanks,

- Do you have a list of sysops you had assigned for the non-English Lostpedias? Just from a perusal it looks like German and Spanish have started to receive some support and furthermore now have reactivated sysops. I don't know the status of the other languages, but as I recall there were some languages which did not have sysops? If that is true I'm a bit concerned of major migration issues (e.g. project page article prefix changes, such as what happened in Spanish) remaining unresolved in those languages that lacked sysops before the migration. If you could make sure that's somewhere on the migration techs' list, that would be excellent. -- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯ Talk 17:56, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

- The most likely cause of this is that the page is cached when you're not logged in. One of the things you can do to "refresh" a cached page is to add ?action=purge to the end of the URL. You can read more about purging page caches here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Purge --Admin 22:07, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
what do you mean?--DF3 t c 17:14, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- Please read the help in the link I posted. It's the way you can force the page to clear it's cache. Similar to the way one might clear their browser's cache. --Admin 00:51, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
hey. i tried it and it did not work.--DF3 t c 15:49, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- Does it work now? I just went to this link http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/User:Dharmafreak3?action=purge when I was logged out and it let me clear the cache. --Admin 23:23, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
thanks, but no.--DF3 t c 02:33, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- You'll have to be more specific then. What change did you make that you can see when logged in, but not logged out? Also, have you cleared your browser's cache? Other than that, I'm not sure what it can be. Noone else seems to be having this problem, so I'm pretty sure it's confined to your computer. --Admin 23:23, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi. i think that if i save the "code" of the page and you delete User:Dharmafreak3, and i re create it it will stop. Please write back. Thank you.--DF3 t c 15:07, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Question
Hey,
I'm new to Lostpedia and I've been editing and adding information wherever I see fit. I am a bit confused, though, as to if I am following copyright laws and rules. I have been saving pictures from www.lost-media.com to my computer and then uploading them to this website to use on the pages. I was wondering if this is okay and if not, what Ishould be doing to add pictures. The only pictures I have added are on Daniel Faraday's page and Sun Hwa Kwon's page.

Pages are broken
Can you or someone else fix the problems with the edit history on, for example, 316/Theories? People are unintentionally overwriting each other's edits. If you try and edit a section on the most recent revision, you get a "WARNING: You are editing an out-of-date revision of this page. If you save it, any changes made since this revision will be lost." warning, as well as the most recent revision in the edit history is not (click on the diff, then you can click forward to a more recent revision with a previous date). This is all clearly broken. ∇ϕ 07:46, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Problem editing "Theories" pages
if you are not the person that i am supposed to give this info to, then please direct me to the correct person.....
we are having a problem editing the Theories pages (specifically He's Our You/Theories). when you add a comment to the page, it automatically delete's whatever edits the user before you made. i will provide details below. this happened to me all day on saturday & then today monday when i went back to the page. it took communicating with the people who we percieved to be doing the editing to figure out what was going on. everyone's post was getting deleted & we thought it was being done intentionally. times are in EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME.
please see all posts from Revision history of "He's Our You/Theories" starting with..........

also see User talk:NEVERGIVEUP, to see that we were not intentionally deleting each other's posts, we were just trying to add our own post but we realized were deleting each others in the process. --NEVERGIVEUP 14:29, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Kevin,
This problem with the theory pages has occurred after every episode, starting with LaFleur/Theories, where I first reported it at User talk:Robert K S#Attempt. At the risk of seeming strident, that's every episode. While I lay this problem at the feet of Wikia, the apparent solution is to save the content of the theory page, delete the page, re-create the blank page and re-insert the content. This results in a loss of the page history, but this is a minimal situation when compared to the problem with edits, which I have dubbed as a "feeding frenzy."
I'm surprised, with the experience since LaFleur/Theories, that no one has established a protocol for intervening when the frenzy begins.
Can you help us?

Revisiting episode titles ban + Old spoilers discussion
Hello. So, a while back, there was a decision made to ban all episode titles from the wiki with the exception of the immediately upcoming title. As far as I can tell, this decision was made in the topic Lostpedia talk:Spoiler Policy/Archive 02#Titles are spoilers! (redux) and was made because there was no way to create a collapsible Nav template for the episodes. As you may have seen, users were recently able to create such a template. As such, the original justification no longer applies, so I've reoppened the discussion here. If it's not too much trouble, I would like to get all the SysOps to weigh in on this publicly, as I feel previous spoiler policy discussions have been ignored and/or avoided by SysOps from time to time (particularly [[this one where there was a user consensus to set aside a page for officially released content from the producers, similar to the old "/Spoilers" pages, but used only for official content, which was never heard about again, despite a 100% consensus in the discussion.) At any rate, it would be great to have you all weigh in since I think this is an extremely important issue for Lostpedia that we have resolved, given the original reasoning behind it. Thanks. Hello, I'm one of the admin for the Girl Genius Wiki (and a big fan of Lost, which is how I knew about this place). As Girl Genius also has long-running mysteries that invite lots of speculation, I would love it if we could modify a couple of Lostpedia's policies and informational templates for our use, particularly Template:Theorytabtop and Lostpedia:Theory policy. During the hiatus the theme has been fan appreciation. And I thought what better way than to have a fan fiction contest. And what better place to have it then on lostpedia! There would be rules and challenges each week or two. We would write 18 episodes each has to be with in the same story arc Ben can't die one episode and then come back to life the next one.
