    I have not been part of the Lostpedia community for long, so please forgive me if this is old and already answered.

    Did we ever get an explanation as to who the bearded fellow in the cabin was? I was looking at a photo of the "phantom" recently, and it confused me all over again.

    I don't think the MIB has a name. And I think that this is important, considering the dichotomies already established in the show.

    The MIB is the antithesis of the light -- the one found in the cave. Mother had said that each man has a small amount of the light within them. What we also know is that each man has a small amount of darkness. The light shared by humanity has no name; similarly, neither does the darkness.

    I think Jacob has a name because his natural mother had already given him one. If you think about it, there really was never a need to name the "other," since they were to remain secluded and simply live out their destinies as Mother foresaw them. Notice also that Mother does not have a name.

    So... are we to believe that the smoke monster was released by Noname falling down the hole? Or is it Noname's "soul" or "essence" that takes on the smokey form?

    I'm not sure if this has been discussed much, but it's something I've been wondering about.

    Has anyone figured out why it is that the MIB can't take anyone else's form? What is so special about his incarnation as John Locke that makes it impossible for him to take on another guise?

    I was just wondering why it is so important that the two timelines are somehow "at the same time." To me, this is nonsensical, since they are two different timelines, and by definition are not happening "at the same time." Of course there are glimpses of the OT from the FST, but does it make sense to say that they are happening concurrently?
