Moral Question and Connection

In "Solitary, Sayid kills a soldiers and shoots himself in the leg in order to free someone he loved. In "Two for the Road," Michael kills two women and shoots himself in the arm to free his son. They basically did the same thing. The question is why do viewers (including myself) hate Michael for what he did, when we are easy to forget that Sayid had done the same thing (and several other things)? I'm not saying we should like Michael or hate Sayid, I just thought it brought up an interesting point.
