Hi friends. I'm just throwing this out there. I look forward to hearing other's comments and sharing our collective thoughts.
The first thing I uttered after the finale was, "I don't get it."
About 30-40 minutes before the end of the show, I remember saying out loud that the sideways "wasn't real", that it was "a lie". So, I know I basically understood where they were going with it. But still, when it got to the very end, the prospect of the sideways being an afterlife just made me cling to other stuff that we just saw happen. It definitely feels like none of it matters. I guess that's the point. They killed/contained the evil, the island is safe, etc., etc., but it was the journey that mattered.
They purposefully left a lot for us to draw conclusions from. Jacob said it only ends once. But did it end? That's for us to decide. In other words, here are some of my own personal conclusions that aren't right or wrong, they're just mine:
- "It only ends once, everything else is just progress." -- "It" can be humanity or the human condition. Hurley is new Jacob, but Hurley is going to "do it better." Hurley is a symbol of human progress. In other words, this definitely isn't the "end" for humanity and the island. Good and evil still both exist in man.
- "Live together or die alone" -- How about? "Live together and die together"
- "Whatever happened, happened. You can't change the past" -- You can't change the past, but you CAN change. These people are eternally changed. Those changes are reflected in the sideways/afterlife and those changes are eternal. They transcend time.
Those are the main ones that I can share off the top of my head. There are probably 100s of other things rattling around that I can't articulate yet, or ever. But I'm satisfied, and I think after 10 hours of thinking about it that I get it. At least, I get it for me.
What are your thoughts???
