So how did everybody feel about "Ab Aeterno"!?

Ultrappill March 24, 2010

I personally feel that it was a brilliant episode. How does everybody else feel? Oh and that bottle/cork thing was awesome!

  • Just watched the episode tonight in the UK - I have been dying to see Nestor on screen again, so apart from having an erect penis over that (not literally), the Hurley existence at least bridged the gap between the 19th and 21st century .. very erie .. very mysterious .. very thought provoking . but PLEASE . PLEASE do not be bloody purgatory

  • When MiB said Jacob stole his body, does that mean Jacob has it hidden somewhere or is he actually in it now? Is Jacob inhabiting the MiB's body now?

    Amazing episode!!

  • This was a really great episode, but I must admit, when Jacob was dunking Richard in the ocean, I kept wanting him to say "Give me the money, Lebowski!" LOL!

  • Wow. There are obviously not enough words to sum up how amazing this episode really was, but I have to say---unless I'm forgetting one---that it was my favorite episode ... EVER. We finally got some serious questions answered, which was nice after eight other season episodes of nothing being explained. It was reather refreshing.

As for Isabella's ghost thingie with Hurley ... Has everyone lost their mind? Have you forgotten that Hurley can see/talk to people who are deceased. I don't think she's "haunting" the island. I just think she thought it was her time---seeing that Richard was getting a little off his rocker---to say some things to him. She could only do this through Hurley, and there we are. I don't think she's going to be seen again on the island; she already said everything she wanted to say to Richard.

But I cannot get over how we actually made some progress with the answers to questions. FINALLY! It was such a great episode.

Besides, I'd been waiting forever for Richard's episodes. He's such a fascinating character, and we finally know why he acts like he always does. (And why he seemed a bit out-of-it, per se. I loved the episode all the way around. And we finally got to see Carbonell act for more than two lines of something.

As for the future, I hope Richard stays on the "Jacob" side and leads the candidates in the right places. It's going to be amazing to see how all of this plays out. I love this show.

  • Great episode, nothing else...

  • To everyone wondering about Isabella being on the island:

I agree that the first time we see her on the ship it is MIB. Jacob confirms this by telling Richard that "That's not your wife."

We have seen Hurley talk to the dead before, on and off the island. He was playing chess with Eko back in the looney bin, and he has spoken to other dead people on the island. I believe that it was not MIB when Hurley was talking with him. When Hurley is speaking with the dead, only he can see them (from what I remember- if anyone knows of an example otherwise, let me know). Richard couldn't see Isabella, so I believe that was actually the ghost, or spirit, of Isabella coming to see Richard.

  • I did like all of the questions that were answered, and, of course, the bottle/cork comparasion; but the actual episode wasn't all that good until the end. Before Richard got on to the island and MIB came up to him, his backstory was not that interesting. It did get better toward the end, though.

  • mastermathias19, i know. that's what i was saying. MIB was obviously isabella at first on the island, just as he was yemi and christian and emily in the past. (it's likely due to his "scanning process")

what i'm iffy about is the ending, when it's actually isabella's spirit. what's she doing on the island?

  • How did MiB get Isabella's cross? Was Richard carrying it with him and MiB stole it? Sorry if the answer is obvious. There were too many things to absorb at once and this was just something that I didn't realize until now.

  • "...if someone who died off the island is on the island, then chances are it's just the smoke monster. isabella's precence begs the question, how did her ghost end up there?"

I think it is clear...MIB can be any dead person he wants to be, regardless of where their bodies are as long as he's on the island. The real question is...is Hurley really seeing Jacob or MIB?

  • smr62, i like the notion of her spirit being tied to a shared physical object... either way, it didn't really detract from my enjoyment of the episode.

  • such a good episode. hurley freaked me out in the beginning when he was speaking spanish

  • @sherlockvoneinstein

It was my impression that the necklace had something to do with the ghost. And when earlier in the episode she said they would always be together or something along those lines. she was just following through on that. Either one of those could be reasons Isabella's ghost could be on the island.

  • Great episode. I actually wish it was a two-parter. I would have liked to have seen Richard working for Jacob and his first couple of dealings as host of the island.

  • @DharmaFreedom

I was thinking the same thing, however, I think the only indication that the ship we saw while Jacob and MiB were talking on the beach was the Black Rock was A) our (the viewer's) own desire for it to be, and B) the "pop up video" info in the enhanced version which.....isn't always correct.

    Other than that....WOW

Nestor was awesome. It was nice to see him be able to flex his acting chops after 5 seasons of calm, cool, and collected.

  • like everyone else, i thought it was a very strong episode for the reasons already mentioned...

so i'm just going to add one critique... the first time we see isabella on the island is obviously the monster (as it was likely that the monster was ben's mom)... so having her ghost on the island at the end seemed, well, out of place within the established "rules" of the island.

(when i say "rules," i'm refering to the narrative. im refering to the writers keeping plot developments consistant and coherent with the information they've already given us. in other words, if someone who died off the island is on the island, then chances are it's just the smoke monster. isabella's precence begs the question, how did her ghost end up there?)

nevertheless, it was still a rather satisfying episode!

  • @dharmafreedom I dont think that was the black rock that we saw in the season 5 finale. Just some other ship filled with people jacob brought to the island to kill.

  • Not one of my favourites episodes and definitely the explanations were a bit forced. Black Rock arrives to the island in a wave as tall as the statue and ends in the middle of the island and the explanation of Richard's immortality is just because after having said all the things he desired he didn't have anything more to say than living forever to escape from hell?

By the way, the same that British, Australian and North American people speak the same language but they don't share the same accent, this as well happens with Spanish and Mexican, Colombian, etc, even the difference is bigger and not limited to the accent. I understand that recurring characters like Richard can not hide their origins but well is quite strange for a Spanish to see Canary Islands people talking like that :)

The best for me was the apparition of the Man in Black again, I think is a good actor with a strong role which fulfils quite well.

  • If the island is the cork, and the island is underwater in FST, then FST is the world with MiB evil unleashed on the whole world.

  • I too enjoyed Ab Aeterno great episode loved the cork and wine analogie but im curious where on earth did the name Ricardus come from

  • I like the fact that we found out the limits of Jacob's powers. Richard's story was great. Finally, a chance for Nestor to wow us ! Great acting by Nestor. I agree though the story didn't advance per se, but we have more scope on what we do know. The humanity of his story was great. And the Black Rock taking out the statue was a nice touch. No bomb blast damage. One question...last season the Black Rock was in a peaceful ocean coming to the island. This time...the storm of the century. What gives?

  • I thought it was a great episode. It's what most of us have been waiting for since first meeting Richard. It was really great to finally get his backstory. I realize that it didn't further the plot that much, but it did finally answer some of the question we have been wondering about: the reason MIB needed to have Jacob killed, Richard's purpose and how he came to be the way he is, and it further set the "battlefield" for the rest of the season. Now we just get to sit back and see how it all plays out.

  • i had my fill of omfg moments. i am struggling to think of a non-finale episode i have enjoyed more. in fact, i cannot think of any. this was very heavy on the mystery solving, but did it so mysteriously. the nature of MIB is more clear. the depth of his manipulation...just great.

  • It was OK but at least no flash-sideways. My favorite part was predictable but still great - Hurley coming out of the jungle to "rescue" Richard.

I did like the wine metaphor.

  • I want a cork t-shirt
