    Genie in a bottle

    March 3, 2010 by Tvdoherty

Wishes, smoke, confinement to the island - it sounds analogous to the genie in a bottle. MIB is the genie, who wants out of his bottle, the island. He is recruiting people to help him to the end by offering to grant their wishes. He seems to be seductive in the way he promises things, with no strings attached or caveats. But be careful what you wish for.

In contrast, when Jacob offered to heal Dogen's son he made the consequences of accepting his offer very clear. Dogen would never see his son again.

I'm not very well versed in Genie mythology, and I wonder if this analogy can only be applied to MIB or if there is some similar role to that being played by Jacob in Genie mythology.

My re-watch has taken me through season 2's "The Hunting Party" and I've noticed that Jack and Locke never seem to cut their hair, and it also doesn't appear to grow. I don't remember if this ever gets addressed in later episodes or not, but we see Michael and Jin's hair grow quite a bit and we also see Kate give Sawyer a haircut while Jack and Locke never seem to need one.

So their is either a trivial explanation for this that involves off screen grooming, or could it have something to do with Locke's season one smokie encounter and something special about Jack, maybe related to how he woke up in the Jungle? Maybe I'm just nuts.
