We have no reason to believe that Desmond or Walt might be in danger, and John is definitely dead, we saw his body.

No. Because the unknown is not because of the possible (but highly improbable) reset, they are marked unknown because they were at the site of a nuclear weapon detonation. It is currently unknown if they are alive, dead, or whatever; sort of like how until season 5 we marked Jin as unknown (because it was unknown if he was still alive) and Daniel too (because it was unknown if he moved with the Island).
Locke is dead, and Terry O'Quinn now portrays Jacob's Nemesis, who is alive on the Island. Desmond and Walt are alive and off Island.
Their statuses are known. The people there when Jughead went off? We don't know what happened to them, and we won't know until 2010.

I think that their statuses are unknown because of the bomb and how if it worked how Jack wanted it too then Desmond and Walt will never make it to the island. Its just to keep us guessing if the bomb worked or not.
