why was miles a cop in the afterlife?

now for all of the main characters we can see why they were what they were in the afterlife; jack and juliet-parents, desmond-widmores right hand man, ben-an ambitious teacher, sawyer-a cop, daniel-musician. now these make sense, and a number of others were almost the same as in the OT: charlie, shannon, boone, ana lucia. but miles was different, very different from his real life. now other then being sawyers sidekick like in the DI i cant seem to place why he would be a cop. is it to actually do something good? make chang proud? idk i just cant place any real reason he would be a cop, unless of course being sawyers number 2 was really that important to him. im not sure any ideas?
