Island time or world time?
From Lostpedia
Ok, just a thought that I have wondered about, when we see the island flash through time, should we assume that the whole world is flashing also or just the island. The reason I am asking this is b/c when Sawyer and Juliet are sitting on the submarine dock debating to join DI or to leave one of them says that it 74 there is nothing to go back to. But how do they know that? I have probably forgotten but I don't recall this question being addressed on the show.
I know that Daniel left the island by means of the submarine and came back but how do we know he was still in the 70's during that time? I mean that submarine could be like Marty's DeLorian.

the island flashes through time, but there is a perimeter around the island that if you are far enough away, you will not go with it, like an event horizon, in season five juliet and sawyer could have gone to america but it was 74, no internet or hd tvs there, faraday did go to ann arbor and he would have seen what seventies america was really like

that is interesting how do we know it was the 70s in ann arbor ? could daniels info been from 2000 timeline rather than the 70. it would make more sense for it to only be the 70 s on the island the whole world did nt have a time flash ....hmmmmm

Great point Polarbear. I'm reminded of when Ben turned the wheel popped out in the desert and after kicking butt with his magic stick he checked into a hotel and had to ask what date it was, and as an aside he asked the YEAR. So it seems to me nothing's certain. If the island is 'out of alignment' who knows what year it could be in the real world. I was wondering why when the O6 came back from the real world and met up with those who stayed on the island exactly 3 years had passed for both. The Widmore/Locke interaction time of 3 days was proof to me that it's all relative.

the whole time difference has me totally confused, time seems slower on the island but oceanic 6 did nt notice any difference in the time -days- there were on the island and when they got back to the real world time seemed the same. i cant make any sense of it one way or the other....great points freedom for the jumpsuits.

Dharma Freedom, I think you just pointed out to me the proof I needed to answer my question. Which was right in front of us the whole time. Duh. : ) Timeline Sept 04 plane crash,Dec 04 rescue, (some stay some go) those who stay flash and flash until it is 74, those who leave still 04. 3 years pass for both b/c no skipping record, ajira comes to the island times are 77 and 07. They are split they need to realign the time lines. Which we should see in S6. SO it is just the island and its perimeter that time is changing for. Not the whole world. So BIG question is (and yes I have seen it posted else where just can't help asking it now) When will we be Ep1 Season 6??? a) ancient times b) 07 present day c) 77 hootenanny time d) 2004 plane crash day e) 2004 purple sky event MY PICK!!!!

I think Ben asked what year it was because no one can tell what year they will end up in... Ben went to 2005 after turning the wheel in 2004 and Locke went to 2007ish when turning the wheel in what appeared to be the Statue's time, ie. 1800s. I don't think it's because the rest of the world flashes with the Left Behinders during the time flashes.
As for whether the rest of the world flashes with the Island... if Sawyer and Juliet saw the Kahana disappear when Ben turned the wheel, that proves that the Kahana and the Island are in different time periods. If the rest of the world flashes with the Island, then Juliet and Sawyer would still be able to see the freighter after Ben turned the wheel. Seeing as they can not, that shows that the Island has moved through time but the rest of the world hasn't.

But the freighter blew up before Sawyer made it back to shore, and Jin was on the freighter and he flashed back too.

THE ISLAND IS NOT TIME-TRAVELLING. It's so obvious that those with an attachment to the Island (i.e. the Others) move THROUGH SPACE with the Island when Ben turns the wheel. Those who have only been on the Island a short time (i.e. 815rs) are thrown through time as time bends around them. This is the 'unpredictable' result of turning the wheel Ben mentioned.

probably one of the aspects of the time travel that was just understood - the rules of it that TPTB set out
