Sideways - Life Without Jacob

I think the Sideways are a look at what the characters' lives would be like if Jacob had not "touched" anyone. Flock tells Sawyer Jacob would have visited him in the past when Sawyer was vulnerable and lead him on a path to the island. Flock goes on to comment about Sawyer making decisions in the past that were not really his. If Jacob was able to influence individuals in their decision making in the past and this influence lead them to the island, without Jacob's interference one could image that the characters would have made different decisions thus altering the way their life, and the lives of those affected by their decisions, would turn out.
