The smoke monster told Sawyer that it was just an island, it didn't need protecting, etc, etc... He also told Ben that he couldn't think of anyone better to be in charge of and protect the island. The whole show, MIB and Jacob are pretty much fiddling with people's heartstrings, making them think they are important in the grander sense, but really (ex. Locke) they are only important to help Jacob and MIB fulfill their goals (kill Jacob and whatnot). Did anyone notice a corollation between MIB telling Ben that, and the principal at the school telling Ben that the history lessons he tutored were just to make him feel important? (Just like everything else has been so far)
