Mother's Plan
So, I've been rewatching the show, and something dawned on me. I've always felt that it was entirely possible that mother was the monster. It all makes sense now.
Mother was both the protector and the monster, therefore she was protecting the source from herself. She was doomed to live forever.
It was only when The Man In Black was born that she decided to kill Claudia. She then took the form of Claudia later, so that the Man In Black would join the other people's camp. She knew Jacob would stay. That is why she said that it was always supposed to be Jacob, and why she thanked The Man In Black for killing her. She effectivly split up her powers, the protecter side to Jacob, and the monster side to The Man In Black.

I'm fine with the idea that mother was a monster. You can't find a more efficient protector than a cloud of killer smoke. Danielle even thought the monster the island's security system.
But why does that mean she protected the Heart from herself? What says the monster has to destroy the heart? Anyone tied to the Heart who wants to escape the island would want to turn the Light off, just as the survivors wanted to turn the Looking Glass off, but that's no reason for Mother to want to.

I agree!
Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have intimated the possibility of Mother being a smoke monster herself several times (podcasts, DVD commentaries and interviews) without (of course) ever confirming or denying a thing. So it's not outside the realm of possibility at all. The wall carvings in the temple suggest the smoke monster was around in ancient times as well. So was this (alleged) smoke monster 'Mother' or someone/thing else?
The 2007 version of the smoke monster was the reincarnation (I use that word loosely) of the MIB. A man who long before his human body death wanted to leave the island more than anything else. Hence why the characteristics of wanting to leave the island were unique to him. If/when Mother was a smoke monster, she had no interest in leaving and used her smokey powers to protect the island (as seen in the aftermath of the Roman village incident).

It's an interesting theory, and if it was the correct one, I would have liked to have seen it in the show. If it is true, why on earth did they not include it in the show? I was disappointed with Across the Sea to be honest.

Ok, I still don't think that the mother IS the monster, but I am certain that she had prior history with the monster. In some context you could suggest that this lady was at one point as corrupt as Ben Linus was, but was also in some ways a believer of the faith enough so that she had it coming from both sides... black and white... and because of this ended up being the ONE. (I think Ben is the 'one' at the end for the same reason)
I think the key is the combination of black and white (yin yang) that creates balance. In a way imagine that the mother was at one point lead by the smoke monster, stayed with it alone for so many years until she realized it was her vs. it. She then trapped the smoke, and lived alone. BUT once people showed up on the island, it became her duty to carry the cycle through again (whether she felt it had to be done for the island, or whether she just needed to do it so she could die). I figure when I watch this episode that as soon as that second baby was born, the mother knew one of those twins was going to kill her and one way or another the smoke would be free'd again. (Also it was no doubt the smoke monster that destroyed the camp and killed all the people) Therefore she had to train both to take her place... because one of them would be the ONE for the next 1000 years
SO anyway the reason I dont think the mother is the -monster- is because the monster represents only black. Same way I don't think MIB is the -monster- either. OF the monster perhaps. But the smoke is smoke... in no way human. The ONE has to be of both black and white... as Jacob is of Adam and Eve...

That's an interesting theory. I'd thought before that Mother could be the monster, but I'd never really thought about the whole thing with Jacob and the Man in Black.

I've heard the theories of Mother being another Smoke Monster and the scene where she apparently killed the entire village would indicate she would have to have had supernatural powers to do so, as one woman couldn't do it by herself, which was a good argument.
However, I heard someone say she could of easily snuck into the camp at night and poisoned their water or food which was left in boiling pots all around the camp. Then after they all died she burned the bodies and the village. Much like an earlier version of the "purge" of Dharma village.
So, I think Mother was more along the lines of Rousseau, a woman driven insane by loneliness and paranoia. The weirdness of the island tends to do that to people!

So the idea thereafter is to make Jacob bring more "villagers" to the island forever so he can "not" kill them a batch at a time...too formulaic to be paranoid. Definitely intentional.
