It's occurred to me with the recent revelations about Jacob in the past couple episodes that he represents Darlton, and the Others/Losties represent LOST fans. Everyone expects that every little nuance of Jacob's existence and actions is deeply significant and has personal meaning. When really he's just a guy with a job to do, who gets pissed off, makes mistakes, isn't perfect in his record-keeping, and is otherwise flawed like any person. But whackjobs like Ben spend their entire life revering him only to freak out when they feel ignored or become disillusioned. The best of us are like the main characters who sat around the fire with Jacob in WtDF, and can accept it when Jacob admits his shortcomings without trying to read even between THOSE lines for deeper meaning.
