Sawyer and Juliet came back from the hatch, along with Charlotte and that other freighter guy (whose name I finally found out is Miles), but Daniel hasn't come back yet, and they don't know why. Sawyer said that when they arrived at the hatch, it was blown up just as we'd left it, but then after a flash of light, the hatch was suddenly intact and buried in the ground as it was when we first found it! He doesn't understand why Daniel took them there, but the bottom line is that it won't help us, so we need to start figuring things out on our own.
I then finally got to ask Sawyer what exactly happened back at Locke's camp, and he reluctantly filled me in. It's actually worse than I thought -- a lot worse. A few days ago, a group of soldiers with guns, apparently from the freighter, attacked the barracks and killed most of our people! Doug, Tracy, Jerome, Steve, and whoever else unaccounted for are all dead!! The rest of them escaped, but Claire mysteriously disappeared in the middle of the night on their way back, and they found Aaron alone the next morning! And Locke went off to do something with that Ben guy at some greenhouse -- Sawyer has no idea what. Sawyer eventually boarded the helicopter with Jack, Kate, Sayid and Hurley to head to the freighter, but it was leaking fuel, so Sawyer voluntarily jumped out over the ocean so that they could make it safely, which obviously became futile when the freighter blew up. He's assuming the helicopter either blew up with the boat or crashed in the ocean.
At that point, Sawyer didn't want to talk about it anymore, and I could tell he was obviously feeling survivor's guilt. So I gave him whatever encouraging words I could think of, reminding him that despite the tragedy, the rest of the camp still needs him. He was surprisingly receptive to that. Juliet appreciated it as well.
Anyway, it's time for us to start figuring out our immediate survival needs. Bernard is trying to start a fire, though it doesn't look like he's been successful yet. I'll go ahead and do what I do best on this island, which is to find food in the jungle. I'll ask Craig to join me.
