  For those final four candidates, look at where each was just two weeks earlier. (Two weeks from their pov, time flashes aside.)

  Jack, the one who volunteers to take Jacob's job? He was a drug addict who was attempting suicide. Hurley, who then really became protector? He was in an insane asylum. Kate? Jacob had crossed her name off the list himself.

  That just left one candidate. What was he, a short time earlier. Oh, nothing much. Only the Island's Head of Security. But he doesn't end up taking the job...

  Also, how epic was it that we had the finale in the same week as this episode?!

  It's strange, to reminisce like this. Considering many of the people on this site were here when it all went down, and were there to witness how exciting it all was. It doesn't seem like it was 2010.

  Yeah, it's getting close to 2 years now. It'll be two years, in four months.

  But you know the really scary part? When we started this rewatch, the finale had aired only four months previously.

  This episode felt a little odd to me. Partly because I didn't even know it existed until a few weeks before it aired! I was usually very good at finding out episode titles and remembering them. But I was under the impression that the series finale was going to be just as it was in Season 1 and 4, with The End, Part 1 airing and The End, Parts 2 & 3 airing the week after. Not the case, as I eventually found out we should start pondering over "What They Died For".

  This was before Sun, Jin and presumably Frank were lost, so I also thought "they" referred to everyone who had died up until that point. The other reason it felt odd was because it didn't quite build up to the fast pace that I expected the finale to be. Previous finale set-up episodes built the tension by being very frantic, such as "Greatest Hits", "There's No Place Like Home, Part 1" and "Follow the Leader". It felt quite slow by comparison. But then the finale wasn't quite as frantic as those previous finales, so it made sense.

  I did enjoy it though. Apart from when we thought Richard Alpert, the important character that he was, was killed in an instant by being thrown into the jungle by the black smoke. Luckily that wasn't how his story ended. The scenes after that between Widmore, Ben and MIB were epic. Bit of a quick ending for Widmore, thought he would have gone down fighting more than that.

  I think the flash sideways were my favourite parts of the episode though. Particularly Desmond's scenes, such as the final one where he breaks everyone out of custody with the help of Ana Lucia. The music in that scene is awesome, and so is the look of bewilderment on Kate's face when she sees the dress. I also liked how everything was leading towards this concert that we saw Eloise getting ready 5 episodes ago.

  Ah, that ending fs scene! The hey-viewers-get-up-and-dance scene! Right before the finale, two episodes after the "The Candidate"'s tragic deaths, the episode after "Across the Sea", the writers want to remind us: "you know what? This show is fun.

  In terms of setting up the finale, this episode also had a slightly lower burden because "Across the Sea" took the job of "introducing the finale set piece." The same wat "Greatest Hits" had to introduce the Looking Glass, "There's No Place Like Home, Part 1" brought us to the Orchid and "Follow the Leader" gave us the journeys to Jughead/Jacob.
