Richard is an Idiot

Why would he still be thinking everyone on the island is dead in the modern day? he has been off the island plenty of times in the past that we have seen, I would think that would be enough evidence that he isn't dead. Also, Jacob seems to be saying he is keeping evil trapped on the island, either he is misguided or lying, because certainly evil exists off the island.
