"CYOA: You and other CEmen are in a plane crash", more commonly known as the Lost CYOA, was a Choose Your Own Adventure game on the GameFAQs Current Events forum. The story took place over all seasons of Lost, and involved the player becoming deeply involved in the plot of the series. The story's main attraction was the player's ability to alter events throughout the series--some major, and some minor--though most large plot events still happened as they did on the show, as "the universe has a way of course correcting."

Contents

BackgroundEdit

Choose Your Own Adventure stories are a popular pasttime on Current Events, the largest social forum on GameFAQs. BlackDoomShadow, a user (or "CEman") on Current Events (or "CE"), is well known for writing lengthy, dramatic CYOAs. On December 6, 2009, the story began. Part 1, consisting of Acts 1 and 2, ended on December 16. That same day, Part 2, consisting of Acts 3 and 4, began, and ended on January 10, 2010. BlackDoomShadow has announced that Part 3, consisting of Acts 5 and 6, will not commence until later in the year, when season 6 is ongoing.

CharactersEdit

Main characterEdit

The main character, or player character, is kept shrouded in mystery throughout the story. Players went through the adventure experiencing the show through this main character's eyes in second person. At the conclusion of Act 3, the character is revealed to be Jeff "CJayC" Veasey, the founder and administrator of GameFAQs from its inception to 2007. Unlike most Lost characters, CJayC does not have flashbacks at any point in the story, both for pacing reasons and to keep his identity a secret.

After being rescued from the island, Jeff, in the final scene of the story so far, is revealed to be The Man in Black, having taken the body of the real Jeff, who died in the crash, and began manipulating all the other characters to eventually lead to the death of John Locke, setting up season 5.

In a post made after "LA X, Part 1", BlackDoomShadow revealed that he had been writing the story under the assumption the Man in Black was the Monster, an assumption proven true after that episode aired.

New charactersEdit

  • Abyss (XXXAbyssXXX): A gay CEman who is a friend of the player and later starts a relationship with Boone. Staying low-key during the first two Acts, Abyss and Boone come to the forefront in Act 3, accompanying Jeff, Kate, Locke, and Sayid to the Barracks to rescue Jack. Abyss is left behind when the island moves.
  • Carlox: A quiet but loyal CEman who also befriends the player, Carlox assists in fighting Ethan and also hunts for Walt. He accompanys the group to the Pearl as well as joining Desmond's "camping trip." Carlox is left behind when the island moves.
  • BlueMonk: A CEman obsessed with Korean women who, naturally, takes a liking to Sun. The two have sex in the jungle but apparently choose to end their affair. BlueMonk later goes on Desmond's "camping trip" and helps fight the Others at the beach camp. BlueMonk is aboard the freighter with Jin when it explodes and his fate is unknown.
  • Evan (0ElvinKirby0): Another CEman on the plane who helps fight Ethan and hunt for Walt. Evan has not been seen since the discovery of "Henry Gale." Evan is mentioned as having been left behind when the island moves.
  • Hermiione: A "CEgal" who seems to be a potential love interest for the player, though Jeff chooses to pursue Claire instead. Hermiione is caught several times sneaking into the jungle, but the reasons are not revealed before she is gunned down by Michael alongside Ana Lucia and Libby. Later, Alex reveals that she healed Hermiione's wounds after finding her after the crash, and they became friends, meeting in the jungle to discuss their lives.
  • Butters (Butters_1188): A disliked troll on CE who is most well-known for failing to close his account after losing a bet. Butters replaces Gary Troup when he gets sucked into the plane turbine in the first minutes on the island.
  • SBAllen: In the story, SBAllen is a moderator on GameFAQs who takes over for Jeff/CJayC as administrator when he is presumed dead in the crash; he later gives the site back when Jeff returns. In real life, SBAllen became administrator in the summer of 2007, when CJayC retired; it is implied this same course of events happened in the story when the weight of the lie became heavy on Jeff. In a post after the conclusion of Act 4, BlackDoomShadow implied that SBAllen is actually Jacob, which would indicate he will play a larger role in the future and fit with CJayC being a vessel for Jacob's nemesis.

Plot summaryEdit

Part 1Edit

Act 1Edit

The protagonist (who is Jeff "CJayC" Veasey, currently unknown to the reader) and several other "CEmen," including XXXAbyssXXX, 0ElvinKirby0, BlueMonk, Hermiione, Carlox, and Butters_1188, board Oceanic Flight 815 after a Current Events get-together in Sydney, Australia. While onboard, Jeff flirts with a pregnant girl named Claire Littleton. Suddenly, flight 815 encounters turbulence; Jeff is knocked out. He awakens in the jungle of a mysterious island, and meets Jack Shephard. Jeff runs to the beach to discover the wreckage of the plane and realizes it crashed; in the chaos, Butters is sucked into a turbine and killed. After regrouping with his friends, Jeff meets other survivors, such as Kate Austen, Charlie Pace, James "Sawyer" Ford, Sayid Jarrah, Boone Carlyle, Shannon Rutherford, Hugo "Hurley" Reyes, Michael Dawson and his son Walt Lloyd, and married couple Jin-Soo Kwon and Sun-Hwa Kwon. He also meets the mysterious John Locke. About two weeks after the crash, Jeff becomes worried when Claire wakes up screaming. Jeff goes about questioning other survivors and marks every single one as "suspicious" except for a man named Ethan Rom. Using Sherlock Holmesian psychology, he deduces Ethan is not from the plane, but is too late to stop Ethan from kidnapping Claire. Jeff becomes suspicious of Locke and Boone when they begin trekking into the jungle. BlueMonk bonds with Sun and she has an affair with him.

Eventually, Locke finds Claire, and they begin a plan to catch Ethan while Michael begins building a raft. Jeff encounters Ethan attempting to steal Claire from her tent and a fight ensues. Giving up the attempts, Ethan does not return for Claire. Regardless, Jeff, Jack, Carlox, and Evan get weapons and search for him, instead encountering an "eyeliner man". The eyeliner man asks them to stop searching the jungle and leaves. Later, Jeff follows Locke and Boone on one of their treks and learns of the Beechcraft. After Boone climbs up to investigate the plane, Jeff pulls him out before it falls, saving his life. In return, Locke and Boone show Jeff the hatch. Jeff breaks his promise to keep it a secret and shows the hatch to Abyss. Later, Rousseau comes to camp and declares that "the Others are coming." Michael, Jin, Sawyer, and Walt depart on the raft. Jack, Kate, Locke, and Jeff, along with Leslie Arzt, go to a ship called the Black Rock to obtain dynamite with which to open the hatch. Along the way, Jeff encounters the Monster, a giant cloud of black smoke, which chooses to spare him. Arzt is killed by dynamite at the Black Rock. On the way back to the hatch, Charlie appears and says that Claire has gone into labor. Jeff chooses to be with Claire instead of watching the hatch opening, and Claire gives birth to a baby.

Act 2Edit

Jeff rejoins Jack, Kate, and Locke at the hatch, but Jack says to wait until morning to go inside. Locke secretly lowers Jeff inside, and he is knocked out and held captive by the man inside, Desmond Hume. Desmond introduces the protocol of pushing the button, and Jack and Locke enter and rescue Jeff from Desmond. The computer is damaged and Desmond flees, but not before showing the trio a DHARMA Initiative film explaining the origins of the station. A few days later, Jeff meets Eko, a man from the tail section of the plane, who has been trekking with Ana Lucia Cortez, Elizabeth "Libby" Smith, Bernard Nadler, and for some reason, Michael, Jin, and Sawyer. Michael explains that the Others appeared, kidnapped Walt, and blew up the raft, and while on the way to their camp, Ana Lucia accidentally shot Shannon. Shortly afterwards, the distraught Michael heads into the jungle with Jeff, Evan, and Carlox to retrieve Walt, but they again encounter "eyeliner man". Richard explains that taking Walt was not his call, but suddenly darts incapacitate Jeff, Evan, and Carlox. When they awaken, Michael is gone. On their way back to camp, the group finds a man claiming to be "Henry Gale from Minnesota," who Rousseau has captured. They bring him with them to camp and he is held prisoner in the hatch.

Jack and Locke become more at odds over pushing the button in the hatch. One day, Jeff is alone in the hatch with "Henry" when blast doors descend and lock them in. The pair work together to open them, but a blacklight reveals a map on one of the doors. Sayid returns from looking for "Henry"'s balloon, and reveals that he was lying about his identity. Michael returns to camp with information on the Others, and Jeff tells Locke of the map. Soon, "Henry" escapes from the hatch, leaving Ana Lucia, Libby, and Hermiione dead, and Michael wounded. Locke and Eko go to the center of the map and discover the Pearl, which discourages Locke from pushing the button. Desmond returns to camp, unable to leave the island, and he and Locke formulate a plan to let the hatch timer run down to see what happens. Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley go with Michael to find the Others, and Jeff chooses to stay with Locke and Desmond. Desmond examines a log from the Pearl station and realizes he accidentally caused the plane crash. Recognizing the importance of pushing the button, Desmond panics as the timer reaches zero. A system failure ensues, and amidst the chaos, Desmond activates the failsafe feature, engulfing everyone in white light as the hatch implodes.

Part 2Edit

Act 3Edit

Jeff, Locke, Desmond, and Eko wake up in the jungle after the discharge. He encounters Hurley, who tells him that Michael betrayed Jack, Kate, and Sawyer to the Others in exchange for Walt and then left the island. Jeff also meets Nikki Fernandez and Paulo, and proceeds to violently murder them with Eko's stick. Eko escapes from the polar bear because it suffered a brain aneurism from hearing Nikki and Paulo. Jeff, Locke, Desmond, Sayid, and Eko head off to the Pearl to try and contact the Others. Inside, they see an eyepatched man on a TV screen, but before they can investigate, Eko is attacked by the Monster, which has an epic battle with him before emerging victorious. Back at camp, Desmond rescues Claire from a riptide, despite not knowing she was in danger. Desmond reluctantly explains to Jeff that after he turned the failsafe key, he relived a day of his life and then returned to the island with precognative abilities, each one showing Charlie dying in different ways. Jeff does not tell Claire of this, and instead, the two have sex. The next morning, Kate and Sawyer return to camp, saying that Jack is still a captive, revealing the Others are civilized people and not jungle savages. Jeff, Kate, Locke, Sayid, Abyss, and Boone head into the jungle to find the Others' village. They first encounter the Flame and its inhabitant, the eyepatched Mikhail Bakunin. Mikhail is revealed to be an Other, and they take him captive after Locke destroys the Flame. On the way to the Barracks, the group encounters a sonar fence, and while climbing over it, Locke pushes Mikhail through it, seemingly killing him. At the Barracks, they see Jack playing football with Tom and Ethan. Jeff runs out to play and gets captured. Jeff is formally introduced to Richard Alpert, the "eyeliner man," as well as Alex Rousseau, the daughter of Danielle who has been raised by Ben for 16 years. Wanting to meet her mother, Alex frees Jeff, who then frees Abyss and Boone. Locke destroys the Others' submarine, and the group is recaptured.

The next morning, the group, minus Locke but plus Jack and Juliet Burke, an exiled member of the Others, heads back to camp. At camp, Claire becomes violently ill, and Juliet saves her life. Jeff becomes suspicious of a "camping trip" Desmond, Charlie, Carlox, and BlueMonk are going on. He follows them and sees a helicopter crash and a parachute fall into the jungle. He joins their group and watches as Desmond saves Charlie's life again. They meet the parachutist, Naomi Dorrit, and also find a not-dead Mikhail. Mikhail heals Naomi in exchange for not being a captive, but as he returns to the Others, Jeff follows him. At the Others' new camp, Jeff reveals himself and joins Locke and Ben on a trip to meet a man named Jacob, the leader of the Others. At Jacob's cabin, Locke and Jeff do not see anyone in the chair Ben claims Jacob is sitting in. As Locke leaves, both he and Jeff hear a voice say "Help me," and objects begin flying around the cabin. They quickly leave, and at the mass grave of DHARMA personnel, Ben tries to shoot Locke, only to be disarmed by Jeff. Jeff tells Richard of Ben's treachery, and Richard tells Jeff that a group of Others are planning to kidnap his group's women. Jeff returns to camp to find that everyone has left for the radio tower except for Sayid, Jin, and BlueMonk. The tents are rigged with dynamite, and when the Others arrive, the tents are detonated, leaving only Ethan and Tom alive. They take Sayid, Jin, and BlueMonk hostage while Jeff hides. He meets Sawyer and Juliet the next morning and they raid the camp with Hurley's help. Jeff executes Ethan and Sawyer kills Tom. Over the radio, Jeff listens as Locke threatens Jack not to call Naomi's freighter, but Jack does so anyway, declaring that help is on the way and revealing Jeff's identity to the reader for the first time.

Act 4Edit

Desmond reveals that Charlie drowned after disabling a radio jammer in the underwater Looking Glass station. Locke explains that he thinks the people from the freighter are dangerous and leads a splinter group consisting of Jeff, Claire, Hurley, Sawyer, Rousseau, Alex, the captive Ben, and others to the Barracks for safety. Along the way, they meet Charlotte Lewis, a woman from the freighter, and take her prisoner. At the Barracks, Jeff and Claire begin living together. Kate, Sayid, and Miles Straume, another freighter inhabitant, arrive demanding Charlotte. Locke trades Charlotte for Miles and Sayid leaves while Kate lives with Sawyer. Ben shows Locke and Jeff a video of Charles Widmore, the man who sent the freighter, and says that he wants the island back at any cost. Ben reveals he has a spy on the freighter, and it is none other than Michael. Shortly afterwards, the Barracks are attacked by Martin Keamy and his mercenaries from the freighter. Alex is held hostage and Keamy executes her when Ben refuses to give himself up. Jeff tries to make a deal with Keamy but is interrupted by the Monster, apparently summoned by Ben, which attacks Keamy's men and kills all but Keamy and Omar. The group heads back to the beach camp, though Locke, Hurley, and Ben choose to go find Jacob's cabin for instructions. Jack and Kate decide to go to find the helicopter, which landed in the jungle the night before. Jeff and Sawyer go with them and meet Frank Lapidus, the chopper pilot. He says that Keamy went to the Orchid in search of Ben. Jeff, Jack, and Sawyer go to the Orchid and encounter Locke, who says Ben gave himself up. Locke tries to convince Jack and Jeff to lie if they leave the island, claiming that he is about to perform a miracle. Jeff, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Sayid, and Hurley board the helicopter to go to the freigher, with the intent to go back and get everyone else. As the helicopter loses fuel, Sawyer jumps out to lessen the load.

However, at the freighter, they learn there is a bomb onboard. Desmond and Sun board the chopper and it starts flying off right as Jin and BlueMonk appear, having been helping Michael cool the bomb down. The freighter suddenly explodes. Running out of fuel again, the chopper heads back towards the island, only for it to disappear before their eyes. The helicopter crashes and they are picked up by Penelope Widmore, Desmond's girlfriend. As the rescued group heads to shore, Jack convinces them to lie about the island. Desmond and Penny enter a life of hiding while Frank goes back to work. Jeff, Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun, and Hurley are dubbed the "Oceanic Six" and become instant celebrities. As three years pass, Jeff becomes worried about Claire's safety back on the island, and drunkely tells GameFAQs the truth about the island. He learns more about Claire's family, including the fact that she is Jack's half-sister. Eventually, Jeff is visited by Locke, who turned the frozen wheel to stop the time flashes, and agrees to return to the island if it will help save Claire. Shortly afterward, Jeff learns "Jeremy Bentham," or Locke, has died, and goes to see his body on the same night that Jack and Ben prepare to steal it. In a shocking revelation, "Jeff"'s internal monologue reveals that Locke's body is the final piece of his lengthy plan, and that the real Jeff died in the crash. At this point it becomes clear that "Jeff" is actually The Man in Black. The last lines of the story so far are "You've finally done it. You've found your loophole."

Plot changesEdit

With each story update, players were given four options to choose between; the option with the highest amount of votes after an arbitrary period of time was the winner and the story continued with that option. While the main story of Lost progressed as it did on the show, certain major events were changed, as well as numerous minor events, due to the voting of players.

Major changesEdit

  • Ethan is fought off by Jeff during the events of "Homecoming" and chooses not to return to the camp for Claire because Jeff fiercely defends her. He later reappears at the Barracks, where he takes Boone, Abyss, and Sayid captive. Jeff knocks him out and rescues the trio. Finally, at the beach camp in "Through the Looking Glass, Part 2", Jeff defeats Ethan and chooses to shoot him to death as retribution for kidnapping Claire.
  • Boone is saved by Jeff during the events of "Deus Ex Machina". Jeff climbs up to the Beechcraft and pulls Boone out before it falls. Boone is later revealed to be bisexual and starts a relationship with Abyss, a CEman from the crash. Boone goes to the Barracks to help rescue Jack, and has survived the rest of the events so far.
  • Claire is rescued from her doomed house by Jeff before it explodes in "The Shape of Things to Come", and is never lured off into the jungle by Christian. She returns to the beach camp unharmed with Aaron, and so Kate and Sun do not take him to the freighter. Claire is the first passenger Jeff meets, before the plane even crashes, and the two bond and form a relationship over the course of the story. Claire and Aaron are left behind on the island after it moves.
  • The Oceanic Six are comprised of Jeff, Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, and Sun. Jeff replaces Aaron, who was left behind with Claire. Jeff is the first to crack under the pressure of the lie and tells GameFAQs the truth about the island, but they do not believe his fantastical story.
  • Ji Yeon is never born, because Jeff kicked Jin in the crotch in the first Act and prevented him from getting Sun pregnant.

Minor changesEdit

  • Gary Troup is not sucked into the plane turbine; instead, Butters is. Troup is never mentioned and it is not known if he even survived in this alternate story.
  • Hurley does not hold the census to find out who is not on the plane, as Jeff does instead. He also does not go on the trek to the Black Rock, again replaced by Jeff.
  • Richard is a more pivotal character, appearing to the player for the first time during the events of "Homecoming", when Jeff chases Ethan into the woods. Richard is not identified by name, but is friendly to Jeff and asks him not to interfere with the Others. He later appears again when Jeff, Carlox, and Evan go to help Michael find Walt. Richard and the Others knock out everyone but Michael, who they kidnap. Richard finally introduces himself to Jeff when the latter is kidnapped at the Barracks. When Jeff escapes, Richard sedates him after Locke blows up the submarine. Later, Jeff reveals Ben's attempted murder of Locke to Richard, and Richard reveals the plot to kidnap the pregnant women and how he is aware Karl is on his way to warn the survivors, but chooses not to tell his fellow Others.
  • Aaron is born slightly later (in "Exodus, Part 2") because Boone did not die, and so the "life and death" symbolism of his birth on that date was lost.
  • Locke is not left in the hatch with Ben when the blast doors descend in "Lockdown", instead, Jeff is. He is not shot by Ben in "The Man Behind the Curtain", as Alex gave a gun to Jeff and not Locke, so Jeff was able to disarm Ben before he could shoot Locke. Jeff later reveals Ben's treachery to Richard to gain his trust.
  • Nikki and Paulo are violently killed by Jeff with Eko's stick in "Further Instructions" and are never seen again.
  • Eko manages to have a battle with the Monster before it kills him. It is later implied that "Jeff," who is actually Jacob's nemesis, caused the Monster to have this battle with Eko instead of outright killing him.
  • Klugh is killed by Abyss, not Mikhail.
  • Jason and Ryan Pryce are killed by BlueMonk in the initial exploding tents attack, because unlike Jin, BlueMonk was able to hit his dynamite and destroy it, leaving only Tom and Ethan alive.
  • Kocol, Lacour, and Redfern are killed by the Monster alongside Mayhew in "The Shape of Things to Come". In the story, only three unnamed mercenaries are described being killed, though it is later established only Keamy and Omar survived the incident, meaning the fourth mercenary must also have been killed. It is later implied that "Jeff," who is actually Jacob's nemesis, caused the Monster to kill more than just Mayhew.
