ShadowUltra/GameFAQs Lost Comics
< ShadowUltra
(Fan created content. Distinct from hoaxes and parodies)

Added by ShadowUltraGameFAQs Lost Comics is an Internet meme that originated on and is primarily contained to the GameFAQs Television: Broadcast TV forum. The meme involves recreating unintentionally humorous and idiotic topics regarding Lost that are created on the forum, using screencaptures of Lost characters to make it seem as though the characters are saying the dialogue. The meme is similar to Lostpedia's Dinasaur head on lost meme, though several distinctions exist.

"Anyone notice the shark?"
Edit
On February 2, 2010, Lost's sixth season premiered. In the opening scene of the premiere episode, "LA X, Parts 1 & 2", Jack Shephard finds himself sitting next to Desmond Hume onboard Oceanic Flight 815 in the flash-sideways timeline. After the two briefly struggle to remember if they've met before, Jack looks out the window where, unbeknownst to him, the island lays submerged under the water; a DHARMA shark briefly swims across the screen near the Statue of Taweret's remains.
The next day, a user on GameFAQs' Television: Broadcast TV board created a topic called "Anyone notice the shark during LA X 1?" The topic was presumably asking if anyone noticed the DHARMA logo on the shark, because the shark itself was very prominently displayed and would be unlikely to miss. However, this was not accurately conveyed by the topic creator, and users expressed confusion at his obvious question for a few posts before another user sarcastically replied "did anyone notice the ocean?" Immediately, many people began laughing and expressing fondness for this comment, but the meme itself did not take off for another few days.
Classic Lost Topics Remade...in Lost!
Edit
Two days after this topic was made, user BlackDoomShadow made a topic called "Classic Lost Topics Remade...in Lost!" The topic, somewhat inspired by the Lostpedia Dinasaur head on lost in-joke, involved users making comics out of Lost screencaptures with characters saying dialogue based on unintentionally funny topics on the forum. One of the sample comics BDS created for the first post was a recreation of the "anyone notice the shark?" topic, with Desmond and Jack sitting on the plane from the opening of season 6 as the characters speaking the dialogue. Desmond asks the titular question, prompting Jack to look pensively out the window. He then turns back to Desmond, smiles sarcastically, and asks "did anyone notice the ocean?", causing Desmond to look annoyed. This basic formula has become the most popular for recreating topics in comic form, and Jack's grinning face has become a sub-meme of its own.
The topic became a sensation overnight and hit 500 posts, the limit for topics on GameFAQs, within a month. In that time, at least a hundred comics were created by various users, recreating humorous topics or based on original comedic dialogue. The original lines of dialogue, "anyone notice the shark?" and "did anyone notice the ocean?", have become popular phrases used sarcastically when someone makes a seemingly obvious observation, and have spread to other GameFAQs forums. Often, when a seemingly unintentionally moronic topic is made, users will criticize the topic creator for acting dumb on purpose in hopes of having his topic immortalized in comic form. The second Classic Lost Topics Remade topic was created on March 16, 2010, after the original reached the post limit, and all comics to that point were organized by season and episode by user Snake Venom. Users continue to make comics to this day, submitting them in the Classic Lost Topics Remade topic for consideration by other users.
As of May 2010, "did anyone notice the ocean" is the top Google search suggestion for the phrase "did anyone notice."[1]
Common scenes and characterizations
Edit
While dozens of different Lost episodes have been used for the making of comics, one distinction from Lostpedia's Dinasaur head meme is the fact that several characters and scenes have become associated with certain classic comics and are repeatedly re-used for other topic dialogues. Popular scenes include:
- Jack and Desmond on the plane ("LA X, Part 1") The original comic template and the most commonly re-used. Desmond asks a question, Jack answers rudely while making a sarcastic smile, and Desmond looks annoyed. This template has popularized the characterization of Desmond as someone who asks stupid questions while characterizing Jack as mean and sarcastic.
- Locke beating up Richard ("LA X, Part 2") Richard makes a (commonly racist or stupid) observation, to which the Man in Black, in the form of Locke, beats him up and yells something at the assembled group of Others. This template has characterized Richard as racist and the Man in Black as overly violent.
- Jack and Hurley in the lighthouse ("Lighthouse") Jack and Hurley have an argument about something at the lighthouse, which ends with Jack shattering the mirrors. This template has characterized Jack as rage filled or unable to control his anger.
- Sayid laughing ("He's Our You") Sayid has a conversation with other characters, which ends when Sayid makes a joke or punchline that causes him to laugh hysterically. This template has characterized Sayid as silly or insane.
- Jacob and the Man in Black ("The Incident, Part 1") Jacob and the Man in Black have a conversation on the beach. Jacob commonly says something that annoys the Man in Black and prompts him to walk away.
- Ben and Arzt eating ("Dr. Linus") Ben and Arzt have a discussion over lunch in the teacher's lounge. Often, Locke will speak up and join in the conversation.
- Jack and Richard on the Black Rock ("Dr. Linus") Jack and Richard have an intense conversation over a stick of lit dynamite, which ends with Jack laughing maniacally. The stick either fizzles out or explodes, depending on the comic.
- Desmond down the well ("Happily Ever After") In the theme of the scene on the plane, Desmond says something stupid, causing the Man in Black to hurl him down the well.
- "There is no Sayid!" ("The Candidate") Jack's dramatic exclamation to Hurley after he says he needs to rescue Sayid on the sinking submarine has become a popular phrase for alteration.
- The ultimate Jackface ("What They Died For") In a blooper, Jack looks directly at the camera while talking to Locke. This "ultimate Jackface" has become popular on various forums.
- Jack vs the Man in Black ("The End") Jack and the Man in Black come to blows over some trivial subject or argument.
- Racist against Asians (Various episodes) An adaptation of another controversial Broadcast TV meme is having characters confuse the various Asian characters (usually Jin, Miles, Pierre Chang, and Dogen). Oftentimes, a character will criticize others for confusing the Asians, before doing so himself.
- Long winded rants (Various episodes) Adaptations of topics where the topic creator rambles on aimlessly about a particular subject, often using overly large words or in depth descriptions.
- Insert Frank (Various episodes) Frank Lapidus gets inserted into various Lost scenes, adding a comical one liner to describe a situation.
Oddly, Wrestling With Angels, another highly popular Broadcast TV meme, is rarely the subject of any comic.
