My personal feelings about the show now that it's overEdit

Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have gone on the record as saying that their self-imposed "radio silence" in the wake of the finale is appropriate because "the show speaks for itself". I don't think it did, and was disappointed with many aspects of the finale and its decision to—rather than making any effort to explain the many outstanding mysteries for which the fans were owed explanation—introduce yet another layer of mystery by making the flash-sideways world a kind of waiting room for heaven. If that's what the flash-sideways world was, why did the Island exist in it? And why was the Island sunk in the flash-sideways world? The major plot motivator in the original timeline was the protection and preservation of the Island and especially the glowing light at its heart (which we now understand was just an artifact of its "cork"). We were told several times that "if the light goes out here, it goes out everywhere" and if the Island was destroyed, evil and malevolence would spread. But with the Island destroyed in the flash-sideways timeline, has evil spread? No—so why were we even shown that the Island had been sunk in the flash-sideways timeline? At best, this was an unnecessary sidetracking reflecting poor economy of storytelling, or perhaps an artifact of a late-in-the-game change in story plan; at worst, it was an intentional distraction inserted only to mislead, an insult to the intelligence of the show's fans.

The biggest disappointment for me was the total absence of the Monster in the finale and the general neutering of the Monster's powers into impotence in the final season, with the only exception being in "Ab Aeterno". The Monster was a superpowered entity as introduced in the pilot and as elaborated in the first several seasons. There can be no excuse for the show not to have written in a bigger part for the Monster in the finale. Why did it fail to flex its awesome power in any of the final moments of the show? Why was there no explanation for the source or meaning of its power or abilities, its responsibilities and functions on the Island? It was shown to be capable of scanning people's minds and absorbing the entirety of their memories. So why didn't the Monster just scan Charles Widmore or Jack when it wanted to know their plans? The show never explained why the Monster capriciously killed people at times, spared them at others, why it was thought by the Others to be a protector and could be summoned, why it was revered by the ancient Egyptian culture that lived on the Island in antiquity, why it was thought to be a judge, why Jacob never explained the Monster and revealed its dangers to his followers, or why it was necessary to kill Locke once he had been apparently stripped of his powers. There were many mysteries left unsolved, but I think most of them pale in comparison to failing to answer the central questions about the nature of the Monster and the meaning of the Island.

The meaning of the Island. The best explanation we ever got about the Island was that it was a cork keeping evil in. We eventually saw this cork as a literal, and not just metaphorical, device. But once uncorked, did evil spread? The only repercussion we were ever shown was the destruction of the Island.

Top unsolved mysteriesEdit

  • What was the relationship between the numbers of Jacob's candidates and the numbers as broadcast by the radio tower?
  • What was the cause of pregnant women and their children dying if the children were conceived on the Island, and why was this problem not in effect in DHARMA times?
  • What were the rules, how were they made, and how were they enforced? Why could the Man in Black and Jacob not hurt each other, why could Ben not kill Charles Widmore until he could, and what good are rules if they can be broken or have loopholes around them? Why and how, exactly, were certain outcomes prevented from happening, e.g., why could Michael not kill himself? Why could the Man in Black not kill the candidates, but they could kill each other?
  • Why did Desmond say he had a vision of Claire and Aaron getting off the Island in a helicopter, but then it never came to pass?
  • How did a DHARMA Initiative polar bear end up in Tunisia if, in order to access the Orchid chamber, Ben had to blow up the DHARMA initiative's experimental equipment?
  • Why did Ben's mother appear to him on the Island?
  • What happened to Annie?
  • How did Rousseau survive the Purge if it was an Island-wide event caused by the Tempest?
  • What accounts for all the discrepancies between Rousseau's story in "Solitary" and "The Little Prince"/"Dead Is Dead", e.g., the disparate details of the shipwreck, life on the Island, and the circumstances behind recording the distress signal, her claiming not to have seen other people on the Island despite having seen at least Jin, Ben and Ethan, etc.
  • For that matter, what accounts for the discrepancies about the things Ben said about "Him" (Jacob) and knowing John Locke to be "one of the good ones" in "Two for the Road" and what we eventually came to know about Ben's state of knowledge of Jacob and the Island?
  • Why was Walt "special", and how was he able to appear to Shannon and Locke? Why did he apparently live a normal life after leaving the Island if he had powers?
  • Why did the story even bother to introduce children characters (Walt, Aaron, Ji Yeon, Charlie Hume, David Shephard) if they didn't matter and nothing ever became of them?
  • If "whatever happened, happened", then what was the deal with Dr. Chang's arm?
  • Why could Jacob's cabin move? Why was there both Christian Shephard and some other crazy eye dude in Jacob's cabin?
  • Who built the cork, the Monster-calling plug pool in Ben's secret room, the frozen wheel, the Temple, the tunnels, and how do these systems work? I have theories on some of these things but it would've been nice to have a more complete picture.
  • Why did Ben believe he could summon the Monster for protection, and why did he believe it was necessary to be judged by the Monster? What did the Others know or thought they knew about the Monster? Dogen said it was evil incarnate, and they had a systematized response to dealing with threats from the Monster (sending up signal fireworks, laying down ash). But they also knew from at least the time of the DHARMA days that sonar fences were 100% effective in keeping the Monster out. So why didn't they ever erect a sonar fence around the Temple even with all the resources and money they had access to? Why didn't they make attempts to trap or contain the Monster in a small sonar field by means of moving sonar fence posts that made a continually smaller area for the Monster to range in? Why did Dogen think that the ancient dagger would be able to kill the Monster?
  • How exactly did the Monster "claim" the members of the science expedition, Claire, and Sayid, and how and why did the Temple Others have tests to diagnose this "claiming"? Why did the water turn dark in the Temple pool? If the Temple pool was a magical healing pool, why wasn't it used to heal the various other wounded Others, like Colleen, or Ben when he had his tumor?
  • What did Charles Widmore want to do with the Island when he sent the freighter there? What was the war that Charles Widmore spoke of coming to the Island, and why did Charles Widmore believe that things would be better off with Locke on the Island in the event of such a war?
  • Why was Matthew Abaddon so insistent that Locke should go on a walkabout?
  • Why was Eloise able to see the future in the original timeline? What made her a "temporal policeman"?
  • Why was Naomi able to get to the Island if she wasn't a candidate? Why was she able to find the Island if Jacob didn't summon her there?
  • How was Jacob able to leave the Island at will? How was Jacob able to give gifts at a touch? What were the limits of Jacob's powers?
  • Who built the Lamp Post, and how did they even know they should be looking for an Island?
  • What was the connection between Magnus Hanso and Alvar Hanso?
  • Who was in the other outrigger shooting at Locke, Juliet, Sawyer, etc. during the time flashes?
  • What, if anything, did the Others do with knowledge that the Oceanic/Kahana survivors brought to the 1970s? (Ben had copies of Daniel's notebook among his files in his Hydra office.)
  • Why did entering the Source turn Jacob's brother into the Monster, but not Desmond or Jack?
  • How did Mother kill a whole village of people and burn down a well, unless she was also a Monster?
  • Two words: palette drop.

I saw this after I wrote up the above list, but there's a lot of overlap with this video: Lost mysteries

Templates and toolsEdit

  • User:Dagg has kindly created an episode title template. It's used like this: {{ep|1x01}} gives "Pilot, Part 1".
  • Even more useful is the citation template, employed thusly: {{crossref|1x01}} yields ("Pilot, Part 1")
  • I created the {{pleasesign}} template, which can be used to leave a friendly reminder on the talk page of a new user who isn't signing talk page messages. When you leave it, you must substitute it, so use it by typing {{subst:pleasesign}}, not just {{pleasesign}}.
  • I've sandboxed a maintenance checklist that myself and other admins can use to keep up with the editing that is required to be performed periodically.
  • More of a tip than a tool: since the migration to Wikia, occasionally a page will become FUBAR'd, making it impossible for users to edit it correctly. (This happened with The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham and LaFleur/Theories.) Deleting the page and recreating it seems to do the trick.
