An exasperated Charlie, along with Liam, are outside struggling to fix the tire, while Roderick and the band's drummer remain in the van, listening to the radio. Charlie, sick of the smaller gigs the band's been playing, feeling as though he's going nowhere in life, quits the band, much to Liam's dismay. As Charlie and Liam argue, Roderick yells for them to shut up, because "You All Everybody", which would become Drive Shaft's biggest hits, plays on the radio. Ecstatic, Drive Shaft celebrate their victory and Charlie's resolve to stick with the band is rekindled.

As Charlie prepares to jump, a child's voice in the background says "Come on, let's go! Desmond!"

escape the rain but then notices a woman, Nadia, being mugged in an alley. After brief hesitation, he decides to confront the mugger and beats him off with his guitar case. The mugger does not fight Charlie, but rather runs away in a cowardly manner. The woman thanks Charlie for his assistance, explaining that three other people passed by the alley (making Charlie the 4th to show up) and continued on their way, but Charlie did not. The woman then calls him a "hero", something Charlie has never before thought himself capable of being.
Taking place on the first night after Oceanic 815 crashed, Charlie wanders about the wreckage of the plane. He notices Claire and approaches her. He offers her his blanket, though she has one already, explaining that she (still pregnant with Aaron at that time) needs to keep warm for two. She accepts the offer and the two begin to converse. Charlie jokes around, asking Claire if this is her first plane crash she's been on. Charlie then assures her that they will be rescued, cheering Claire's spirits a little and beginning their relationship.
Daniel Faraday is a physicist and professor who parachuted onto the Island from a helicopter sent by the freighter Kahana. He is distinguished by his absentmindedness, his polite demeanor and his scientific insight into the Island's mysterious properties. Daniel spent his entire adult life studying space-time. He is very tender towards Charlotte and harbors romantic feelings toward her.
Benjamin Linus, more commonly known as Ben, is a long-time resident of the Island and a former leader of the Others. He arrived as a child, brought by his father Roger who worked for the DHARMA Initiative. After being educated on the Island, Ben became a workman for the Initiative. At some point, however, he allied himself with the Hostiles. After the destruction of the Initiative on the Island in the Purge, which Ben himself was part of, he became the leader of the successor group to the Hostiles known as the Others. In 2004, when Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on the island, the survivors came head-to-head with Ben and the Others on many occasions. Ben ordered the Others to a location called the Temple for safety against the freighter and became a captive member of John Locke's group on the Island. Ben appears to be able to summon the Monster. On December 31st, Ben fulfilled Jacob's orders by moving the Island; in doing so he sacrificed his presence on the Island and his leadership over the Others - he told Locke to take his place. Ben was banished to the Sahara desert ten months into the future (2005), and since then discovered that the Oceanic Six had also left the Island. He enlisted the help of Sayid in his war against Charles Widmore, and vowed to kill Widmore's daughter Penelope in revenge for the death of his own.
Charlie Hieronymus Pace was a survivor from the middle section of Oceanic Flight 815. Before the crash, he was the bassist and principal songwriter for the rock band Drive Shaft. When Flight 815 crashed, Charlie was snorting heroin in one of the plane's bathrooms. His drug addiction and crippling self-doubt were the biggest obstacles in his life. Like many of the survivors, the crash provided Charlie with a fresh start. On the Island, he formed a relationship with Claire Littleton and her son Aaron.
After avoiding deaths foreseen by Desmond several times, Charlie finally died willingly to save the other survivors. He drowned on Day 91, and after returning from the the Looking Glass station, Desmond told those on the beach of his death. After Hurley gets off the Island, he is haunted by visions of Charlie, who tells him that he must return to the Island.
Boone Carlyle was a middle section survivor of Oceanic Flight 815 and was Shannon's stepbrother. He attempted to assume a semi-leadership role with the survivors but failed due to being rash and young, though he became Locke's apprentice when the two formed a close bond.
Boone survived on the Island for 41 days before he died of injuries sustained in a fall whilst he tried to contact 'rescuers' from the drug smugglers' plane. According to Locke, Boone was a sacrifice the Island demanded.
Dr. Juliet Burke was a member of the Others who later joined up with Jack's group of survivors. During her time with the Others, she lived at the Barracks, but grew increasingly desperate to get off of the Island to visit her dying sister. However, Ben prolonged her stay on the island indefinitely because he thought of her as "his." Juliet has a background in reproductive medicine, and acted as the fertility doctor for the Others after being recruited by Richard Alpert for Mittelos Bioscience.
She left the Others with hopes of leaving the Island with the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, but was distrusted by all of them except Jack. Despite the circumstances, Jack and Juliet bonded during their last few days on the Island before Jack left and Juliet remained behind after Ben moved the Island.
Claire Littleton is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. She is Jack Shephard's half-sister, although she does not know this. She is the mother of Aaron Littleton who was born on the Island soon after the crash, and has done her best to take care of Aaron.
When she was seventeen, Claire was involved in a car crash which caused her mother to fall into a coma for five years, but in turn led her to meet her true father for the first time since he left. During her time on the Island, she entered an inconsistent relationship with fellow survivor, Charlie Pace; however she was reluctant to let Charlie into Aaron's life because of Charlie's drug use and erratic behavior. Aaron was a focal interest point within the Others, and Claire was almost deceived into giving him away and on many occasions on the Island Claire's faith towards motherhood has been tested. Following Charlie's tragic death, Claire joined Locke's group. She left Locke's group with Aaron, Sawyer and Miles, and then followed her dead father Christian Shephard into the jungle. She was last seen with Christian in Jacob's cabin by Locke.
Desmond David Hume was the lone resident of the Swan at the time of the Flight 815 crash. Locke, Kate, and Jack discovered him there 44 days after the crash, after they had blown open the Hatch. After his failed attempt to leave the Island on his sailboat, Desmond joined the camp of survivors. Following the destruction of the Swan, Desmond gained a mysterious ability to see flashes of the future, with which he predicted Charlie's imminent death. During the helicopter ride to the freighter, Desmond's consciousness from the past (1996) began drifting to the present (2004) until Desmond made contact with his constant, his long-lost love, Penelope Widmore. On December 31, 2004, after over three years on the Island, Desmond was rescued along with the Oceanic Six by Penelope herself.
