BackgroundEdit

The Phoenix Project is a top secret DHARMA project. The details of this project were originally only known to certain DHARMA members. Micah Dudley, who is the director of the Phoenix Project, prided himself on his position.

The Phoenix Project worked on life extension. In 1970, they used a serum on Andrew that made him "immortal". Throughout the following twenty-two years, the personnel of the Phoenix Project performed various tests on Andrew trying to see what the limits of his "immortality" were. After the purge, Andrew was freed, but still had the healing powers given to him by the project.

There is a second dose of the serum used by the Phoenix Project in 1970, but, according to Alvar Hanso, it was supposed to come to Copenhagen in 1988, but it never arrived. This is because it was used, some time before then, by Tyson to make himself immortal, like Andrew.

The Pre-DHARMA EraEdit

The Phoenix Project was started by Micah Dudley, Tyson Stanford, Vernon Page, Paul Stevens, and Oscar Stanford in 1968. The idea originally came from Tyson as a result of something that had happened to Micah. The group worked for two years before they were approached by Gerald and Karen DeGroot and invited to join the DHARMA Initiative. Within those two years, an unspecified event happened to Oscar Stanford. (The Second Phoenix)

The DHARMA EraEdit

The Phoenix Project headquarters was located a short distance from the Barracks, inside the perimeter of the sonic fence. The building had two levels: the main floor and the basement. The basement was accessible by stairs. At the bottom of the stairs was a hallway, with two holding cells in it. Andrew, the project's prisoner, was kept in one of these cells. Eli, Janelle, Larry, and Jeff were held in one of the cells for a short time in 1974. Jeff was later kept in the same cell again in 1977. Inside one of the closets of the lower level, there was a secret access area to a second basement of the building. Tyson referred to this second basement as the "third level". It is unknown what is contained in the third level. Some time after the Purge, the main structure of the Phoenix Project headquarters was destroyed. Currently, only the basement levels still stand. (The Second Phoenix)

The Testing BeginsEdit

In 1970, Andrew was captured by Tyson and Vernon and imprisoned in the Phoenix Project for use in their experiments. (Tuck Everlasting)

Captured Time TravelersEdit

After the final flash occurred, the time traveling survivors were stranded in 1974. A week after the flashes ended, Eli was shot by a DHARMA shooter and kept for about a week in a Phoenix Project holding cell, after being given a dose of Andrew's blood to heal the wound. About a week after Eli's capture, Jeff, Larry, and Janelle were captured and put in the same cell as him. (Tales from the Tail) (The Angel) (Tuck Everlasting)

Still in CaptivityEdit

About two years after the time travelers arrived, Andrew was given some food by Micah and told that being used in this project meant he was part of the greater good. (Tuck Everlasting)

Lance and Nancy's Breakout AttemptEdit

Lance and Nancy traveled to the Phoenix Project headquarters in order to sabotage the project, and hopefully release Andrew. The main floor of the building was empty, except for Vernon Page, when they arrived. After Vernon saw them, Lance knocked him out and stayed upstairs to keep watch while Nancy went downstairs to free Andrew. While keeping watch, Tyson and Paul showed up and killed Lance. Inside Andrew's cell, Nancy untied him and was about to leave when they saw Lance fall down the stairs. Knowing they wouldn't make it out, Andrew decided to stay in order to give Nancy time to escape. However, Tyson went down the stairs and killed Nancy before she could escape. (Burning Heart) (Tuck Everlasting)

Reprimanding the Time TravelersEdit

After killing Nancy and Lance, Tyson tried to capture Zander, but was unsuccessful. Instead, he turned his attention to capturing Zander's friends. The only one he was successful in capturing was Jeff. While Jeff was in captivity, Vernon beat him to try to find out how his friends had found out about the Phoenix Project, but was unsuccessful in getting answers. Later that day, Dieter was shown around the building as part of his orientation. (Some Starless Night) (The Day After Tomorrow) (The Kite Runner)

Dieter's Breakout AttemptEdit

The last part of Dieter's orientation was showing him Andrew. The first test Dieter performed on Andrew was injecting him with malaria, from which he recovered instantly. Then Tyson used Andrew's blood to heal Dieter's bullet wound. Later that day, Dieter came by for more tests with Vernon. Instead of injecting Andrew with small pox, Dieter injeted Vernon with sedative and cut Andrew loose in order to let him escape. He also allowed Jeff to escape with Andrew. Before Andrew and Jeff left, Dieter told Andrew to remember him when he went to Germany in twenty years. However, Andrew was soon captured by Vernon and was put back into captivity. After being returned to the Phoenix Project, he watched Tyson shoot Dieter. (Tuck Everlasting)

The Testing ContinuesEdit

Fifteen years after the Incident, Andrew was visited by Vernon who cut off his finger and watched it grow back, instantly. Then Andrew was tied up again and Vernon left. The next day, Paul visited Andrew, but before he could say much, Paul was killed by the gas from the Tempest. Some time later, Andrew was found by Richard Alpert and was finally able to be free. (Tuck Everlasting)

The Post-DHARMA EraEdit

Life Extension ProjectEdit

TLE Article: Life Extension Project
In early 2005, Tyson met with Thomas Mittelwerk and started the Life Extension Project. (The Second Phoenix) For this project, he recruited Jed Smith, Nadine Jackson, Dani, and Travis, who later went to the Island with him. (Brothers Under the Sun) During their time before going to the Island, Tyson's project came under scrutiny of Rachel Blake as she vigorously investigated the Hanso Foundation. (The Lost Experience) According to Jed, the project members came to the Island because they were missing a "catalyst" off the Island. (Brothers Under the Sun)

Return to the IslandEdit

In 2008, after returning to the Island, Tyson brought Derek Williams to the ruins of the Phoenix Project headquarters. He showed Derek the access ladder to the third level. (Score to Settle) In the third level, Tyson showed Derek to the lab where he put together the serum from the formula, which Tyson had retrieved. Leaving Derek to work on the serum, Tyson found Bob in the third level and was asked by Bob about the Phoenix Project. Tyson explained the Phoenix Project to Bob. As he finished his story, Derek found them, but he soon heard Ryder's voice in the level above. After finding Ryder, and his wife right after, Derek was shot by Tyson, who then locked Ariel, Ryder, and Peter in Andrew's old cell. (The Second Phoenix) Ariel, Ryder, and Peter were saved soon after by Elliot, Janelle, Oscar, Sally, and Simon. (Into the West)
