- The "flash-sideways" could be an alternate timeline in which events were never influenced by the island or Jacob (possibly as a result of time travel or moving the island a final time, as the island and many of it's structures seem to be intact below the surface of the ocean).
- For example:
- Roger Linus will never be offered a job on the island by Horace, resulting in Ben growing up on the mainland and becoming a European History teacher and Ethan growing up to be a regular sergeon.
- Desmond will never enter the yatch race (as this was influenced by Widmore and Eloise and their interactions with the island) and for unknown reasons, end up a passenger on flight 815.
- The flash-sideways timeline is part of the crossing of the two timelines experienced by Desmond Hume in "Flashes Before Your Eyes" and "The Constant", George Minkowski and Eloise the rat in "The Constant", Theresa Spencer in "Jughead", Charlotte Lewis in "This Place Is Death" and Juliet Burke in "LA X, Part 1"
