The Temple

The Temple is a location on the Island that is approximately a day and a half walk from the Barracks. Although not yet revealed in the series, it appears to be a place of sanctuary for the Others and is surrounded by a crumbling overgrown wall. There appears to be a network of tunnels and chambers extending beneath the Temple which were first seen in "This Place Is Death". Ben indicates that the wall is intended to keep outsiders from seeing the Temple. Per Ben's conversation with Karl and Alex it seems that not all the Others are aware of the Temple's existence.

History

Given the age of the surrounding wall and chambers beneath the Temple, it seems quite likely the Temple is an older structure possibly dating back to the original inhabitants of the Island. It seems likely the DHARMA Initiative was aware of the existence of this location per the appearance of a special DHARMA logo on Ben's map.

Recent Events

Season 3

According to a conversation between Richard Alpert and Ben, the Temple was where the Others were traveling to after abandoning the Barracks at the conclusion of Season 3. ("Through the Looking Glass")

Season 4

According to Ben, the Temple is a sanctuary that might be "last safe place on this Island." Fearing for Alex's safety on the arrival of the mercenary team on the Island, Ben gave her a map indicating the location of the Temple. When Karl asked if the other survivors could join them, Ben refused stating that the Temple is "not for them. It's only for us." Ben noted that the Barracks were about a day and a half from the Temple. ("Meet Kevin Johnson")

Season 5

A second group of Others are currently at the Temple, according to Richard. ("Follow the Leader")
