Harper Stanhope

Theory 1: Harper can time travel

Evidence

  • This is how she appears and disappears right in front of Juliet and Jack.
  • This is also how she knows (in the flashback) that Ben will kill Goodwin if he finds out about his relationship with Juliet. This is why Harper is more concerned about Goodwin's safety than hurt about the affair.

Counter-evidence

  • Individual characters time traveling has yet to be proven (though there seems to be some evidence indicating that Richard Alpert may have).
  • We've seen Others disappear mysteriously in a similar fashion without any time travel involved.
  • When Desmond time travelled he didn't disappear he stayed there in body in both timelines.
  • Harper could easily have known Ben was a danger to Goodwin without needing to travel in time. If she had time travelled she would have done more to save her husband's life.

Theory 2: The Harper Juliet sees in the present is "the monster"

Evidence

  • Like the apparitions of Yemi and Christian on the island, the monster is taking advantage of Juliet's guilt by manifesting as Harper and telling her to kill Daniel and Charlotte to advance its own ends.
  • This is how she appears and disappears right in front of Juliet and Jack.

Counter-evidence

  • Goodwin might have been a more convincing vessel.

Counter-counter-evidence

  • Goodwin is dead, which would be less convincing as Juliette would know the message wasn't from Ben.

Theory 3: Ben has lived this moment before

Evidence

  • Harper gives Juliet the order from Ben to kill Dan and Charlotte, yet the present Ben has not been in contact with Harper lately, and doesn't have a clue that Dan and Charotte are on the way to the Tempest. He's busy doing his manipulation thing at New Otherton with Locke & Co. So future Ben has lived this moment before and is trying to change the past. Either he sends Harper back in time, or he visits Harper himself from the future and Harper leaves the Temple to go to Juliet. The temple may provide a means to travel quickly about the island. Perhaps through the Cerberus vents.
  • The whispers happen just before Harper shows up. Whispers may be related to two different time periods intersecting (Harper in future talks to Juliet in present).

Charles Widmore

and the Hanso Foundation

and his reason for finding the island

  • Charles Widmore wants to find the island
    • to take advantage of the unique healing properties
      • for exploitation for personal gain
      • to cure himself or someone he cares about who is dying of some kind of inoperable cancer, or paralyzed like Locke.
    • to continue the work DHARMA started or start some new sort of experimentation on the Island's strange properties.

  • Charles Widmore ordered Charlotte and Daniel to disable to the Tempest system as one of their first steps on arriving on the Island.

Who does Harper think Juliet looks like?

Juliet ends up on the island in 1977, when young ben is there. She may become his friend and give him advice, or something of the sort. Then in 2001, when ben, the unquestioned leader of the others, has the opportunity to bring people to the island. he could bring someone who reminded him of his childhood friend. It is debatable if Ben knew whether it was the same woman or not. This could give further meaning to the title of the episode, 'The Other Woman'

Flashback/What is the cause of Goodwin's chemical burn?

  • The chemicals at The Tempest.
  • The burns might be similar to ones caused by handling a radioactive device, like the "Jughead" Bomb.

Why does Goodwin lie about his injury?
