The Others are the survivors of the purge. They may be part of a DHARMA faction that was to be purged, or residence of the island who predate the DHARMA initiative, or a combination of both.

• Why are they pretending to be DHARMA to their outside world contacts?
  • Maybe to make the outside world think the purge was successful...?
• Are they just living on the island or conducting some sort of work?
