Talk:Unanswered questions

This article is trashed.
Edit
Every other question is answered or does not need to be answered. How did Karl and Alex hook up, really??? Really??? Just because answers arent spoon fed to the audience doesn't mean they are not answered. All these talks about ranks, who was Ethans rank? Does it matter? How did Tom leave the island? The freaking sub, perhaps? Who was the American woman that guy liked who sun had an affair with? WTF Johnnymushio 20:16, January 28, 2010 (UTC)
I agree with the general sentiment, but "how did Tom leave the island?" is totally legit: he traveled back to NY after the sub had presumably been destroyed...Ianvl 12:59, April 25, 2010 (UTC)
Time to prune it down a little
Edit
Some of these questions are either irrelevant or aren't speculative questions. Things like "Will X happen" aren't unanswered, and some have already been either explained away or heavily implied. We don't need specific statements to answer some of these. Gutsdozer 03:24, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
we need this page!
Edit
this page is definatley needed! it is a great oraganizational tool for all lospedians! But, I think we need to combine all the unanswered questions from every page and put all of them in this page so that it is all in the same place, no? I've already done Ben, but one person alone cant take on that task. Someone please think about writing me back?10panichellia 18:24, 26 February 2007 (PST)
- Personally I think this page is needed, but the "Unanswered questions" sections in all the other pages should be deleted and simply link to this page at the end. It's way too big of a hassle to have to hunt through all individual pages when a question is answered, instead of just linking here for one single source and editing that when we get our answers. Gutsdozer 13:50, 15 March 2008 (PDT)
Is this page needed?
Edit
Do we really need this? There is a theory section in almost every article, no reason making a bloated page with all the questions and all the theories. --skks 13:00, 28 March 2006 (PST)
I agree. This page will get too long and the relevant info should be part of the main articles. Perhaps a Unanswered Questions section should be added to the individual articles. Jabberwock talk contribs email - 13:09, 28 March 2006 (PST)
All decks, set condition BLOAT --skks 06:19, 4 April 2006 (PDT) I disagree. It gives a good summary of areas of interest and when new information comes along (new episodes, podcasts, interviews, leaks) then it's a good point to find out which questions may be answered.
This page is useful as an index - it is nice to have a list of questions. If the page is to be removed perhaps a definitive index could be created, or am I making too much work? Russell 06:21, 12 April 2006 (PDT)
- I agree. I keep coming back to this page & discovering (or am reminded of) another question that has yet to be answered; there are so many, that's it not hard for even the most devoted fan to forget one or more. I assume that the people behind Lost never heard of the saying, "Questions are a burden to others; answers are prison for oneself", & continue to create more unanswered questions for the viewers. -- Llywrch 11:11, 12 April 2006 (PDT)
Not to mention a lot of the questions look like they've been written by someone who hasnt watched every episode--one question asked if Jack had a half sister, and if so, who was she. BUT the only reason we even KNOW that he might have a half sibling is because we were given a clue that it might be Claire. So the question is a result of an answer we already know...--Trix
General
Edit
- Has anyone explored the question "What happened to Dharma"? Odd scenario: on the one hand, Dharma seems to have broken all contact off of the island (i.e. no replacements for the staffing at Swan station, no maintaince of the hatches, etc) yet steady supply drops are still made. Numerous theoretical off-shoots are possible from this train of thought, but none seem to align well with the current conditions on the island.
- Obviously, Persephone is now exploring that question. --Amberjet11 11:13, 21 June 2006 (PDT)
Sayid

During The Discharge, Sayid is seen back on the boat with Jin and Sun. So after finding The Door he went back to the boat, apparently.

Mr. Eko
Edit
- What did Eko mean when he said "You're next"?
- This was answered in a podcast. The writers said he meant that Locke himself was next (to be killed/judged/whatever by the monster), and that Locke interpreted it to mean "We're all next". Gutsdozer 20:20, 3 March 2008 (PST)

Doesnt anyone remember that she was married to her high school sweetheart? Nadia
Edit
Re: If the government officials told Sayid that Nadia was alive before he boarded Flight 815, why did he then tell Danielle Rousseau that Nadia was dead?
Sayid is lying to Danielle so that Danielle trusts Sayid more. Since Danielle has lost everyone she knows, by saying he lost Nadia, Sayid can make a potential bond with his capturer. --Jericho 7:45, 16 May 2006 (EST)

Ms. Klugh

- No, Henry Gale is. --Dmuk 02:02, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
- That's jumping to conclusions. It's too soon to assume anything. Before Henry Gale came along, it seemed as though Mr. Friendly was the leader, but in Live_Together,_Die_Alone, it is obvious that Henry ranks higher than him. --Fezir 16:53, 7 August 2006 (PDT)

Sawyer
Edit
Q: Did the passenger manifest say "James 'Sawyer' Ford"? If not, how do Hurley and Locke know Sawyer's real name?
A: Perhaps process of elimination.
A. Or he could have compared the passenger manifest with the list of passengers Hurley made just by asking around in lieu of a formal census. In fact, thats how they found out Ethan Rom was an imposter, because he was on the new list, but not the flight manifest.
Penelope British?
Edit
Q: Why did Penelope Widmore have a British (?) accent, when in "Bad Twin" the Widmore family is American, and based on the east coast?
A: She is British or was raised in Britian, based on the following: (a) On the Official Lost Podcast for May 9th, 2006, the producers indicated there are two Widmores, an American and a British one, (b) Desmond is Scottish and was in the British army, if she were also British (or lived there) it's reasonable to assume they met in Britian, (c) if the Island is really located 9 hours east of Fiji and the failsafe was activated in the late afternoon (4pm) it would be 3:05 AM in London which is when she got the call from the Listening Station --flashburn 17:31, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

I believe we know from The Lost Experience now that the The Black Rock was definitely a slave transport ship - and was operated by Magnus Hanso.
Dave
Edit
Is there really still some dispute about Dave? I thought the episode made it pretty clear that Dave is a figment of Hurley's imagination, his psychologist even showed him a photo to prove it to him. Seems like that question has been answered. --Minderbinder 14:20, 21 September 2006 (PDT)
Sorry, man. The dispute isn't that Dave ISN'T a figment of Hurley's imagination, but rather whether his presence on the island is
a) Hurley reverting to his schizophrenic ways under stress, or
b) a manifestation of the monster. It (the monster) really seems to take on a form that the character fears, or has major significance in their past. At any rate, the discussion will continue to rage until we know more about the "monster".
-- mr_tee_canada, 16:59, November 8, 2006
- I would add c) There is also a theory about Dave possibly being Libby's husband, whom she calls David. If you add to that a theory about Libby being a DHARMA recruiter, if Dave=David... maybe there really is a Dave and he really is on the Island? (Yes, the recruiter theory may be a stretch, but we thought the polar bear as "real" was a stretch too until The Hydra and its cages were revealed in Season 3...) --The Swan 19:51, 10 November 2006 (PST)
Infrastructure

- Electricity. Where does the power in the various DHARMA Stations come from?
- I recall this being answered somewhere as by geothermal generation? Anyone remember the source? --Backdooruk 03:32, 8 November 2006 (PST)

Answered Questions
Edit
I think there should be a section with questions that have already been answered (not that there are many) but it would be like a FAQ, what do you think?
- I agree. And I also think there should be a section to put theories for each of the unanswered questions (probably within this Talk section, but maybe with better organization?). --Amberjet11 08:56, 1 November 2006 (PST)

Walt
Edit
Well I was talking to my roommate about this diappointing season thus far and he seemed to be most interested in Walt, we talked and I theorized this about Walt and I added it to Walt: In relation to the fifth unanswered question below: "Why did Walt not want Locke to open the hatch in the first place?" It is possible he forsaw the implossion of The Swan due to the Discharge, and utilizing the theory that the Discharge "destructed of the electromagnetic shield which protects the island from outsiders" he would not want the hatch to even be opened because it's destruction would allow his eventual escape from the island. And as we know from Walt burning the first raft in ...In Translation, he did not want to leave the island.
But, I believe that Ben pointed them to the Hydra Island. So to answer this question: "Why are the letting him go now?" I would theorize to give Jack, Sawyer, and Kate (actually I have my own theories on Kate) a notion that if those three did what the Others told them to do and the Others gave them incentive, the Others would hold up their side of the deal.
Now I'll add to Kate's discussion.
Kate Compromised?
Edit
I think there should be an unanswered question to the effect of "Why is it that Kate is a cataylist to negative occurances happening to Jack and Sawyer on the Hydra Island?" I'd add it, but I think its a rhetorical question that may answer: "Why was she taken by the Others?" and "What did the Others do to her?" I think she was brought as an easy way to control both of Jack and Sawyer.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bobznc (talk • contribs) .
The monster
Edit
Removed "*Can it shape-shift into other people, such as Yemi?", because this, infact, IS an answered question. In one of the podcasts it was mentioned that the monster is actually able to shape-shift into other people. Jack's flying lessons
Edit
The fact that Jack said he took a couple of flying lessons in The Pilot is not really relevant to the show. This was probably only added by the directors to show us that that Jack was rich enough to afford flying lessons, and brave enough to attempt them, as at that point we knew very little about him. This is a common trick in filming, where in a fictional dialogue, one character will state something about themself that gives away personality traits and reveals something about the character. Therefore this question is not relevant as an unanswered question, and should be removed. Opinions?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pinknoise (talk • contribs) .
Jin's Infertility
Edit
Is it possible that the medicine that juliet used on her sister rachel in oder to make her pregnant is the same medicine in the hatch that was supposed to be used to keep aaway the disease and thus seeing it very possible that Jin used it and his infertility was also cured? Or Sun could have been wrong or lied in that she was really the infertile one and she was cured thorugh the medicine?? Even if the medicines are not the same it is very possible the cure of rachel and the cure of jin/sun are from the same reason.

- I like the addition of a link to each subjects' theory page. Something I'd also like to throw in (though I sincerely doubt its possible), it'd be really cool to see something in the template background instead of just a light pastel color (like a faint "?"). Like I say though, I don't think its possible. But, anyway, back to point, I do really like the design version 3 - but any extra creativity to make the template unique would be especially awesome. --Nickb123 (Talk) 08:23, 19 February 2007 (PST)

Did Donovan & Penny Make the Time Travel Connection?
Edit
In "Flashes Before Your Eyes", Desmond tells his friend and physicist, Donovan, that he believes he's time traveled. Later when Desmond ends up missing after his sailing trip, does Donovan get together with Penny to discuss Desmond's theory? Since Penny's father sponsored the sailing race, and has connections to Dharma, did Penny (with Donovan's help) make the connection between Desmond's disappearance, the mysterious invisible island and his time travel story? Perhaps this is why she arranged the listening station that briefly "saw" the island when Desmond turned the key? Penny did say in one episode something to the effect that with enough money and determination anyone could be found.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Feydazzled (talk • contribs) .
Polar Bear questions/answers
Edit
- Why are polar bears, presumably brought by the DHARMA initiative, roaming free on the Island?
- In a podcast/interview it was indicated that they escaped from the Hydra during the collapse of the DHARMA Initiative presumably during the Purge.
- How did the polar bears get from the Hydra Island to the main island?
- Polar bears can swim for miles in open water. They live on sea ice and its what they do. Swimming between the two islands would be a trivial distance for them.
Question
Edit
What if we made an "unanswered questions" template that could completely alleviate the hard work of keeping this page updated? That is, suppose we put a template on every page with an "unanswered questions" section, into which the unanswered questions are input; then, have another template that replicates whatever unanswered questions are currently listed on a specified page. I don't know if that's technically feasible, but I've seen similar things in the past, at least with making a different template for every single page's specific input. If we could make a "general" one and just be able to input an article's name to have it copy whatever's currently in that article's "unanswered questions" section, I think that'd be a godsend. If this is a possibility, I'd be willing to help implement something like this. Either way, I'm also planning to reorganize the current "Unanswered questions" page; it's a bit of a mess. -Silence 00:40, 15 July 2007 (PDT)
- This page recently went under a Article Attack, similar to Wikipedia's Article Improvement Drive, so it's about as cleaned up as it could be. If you want to make a huge reform of the article, put Template:Discussion at the top of the article and propose your idea(s) here on the talk page for some discussion and consensus from the community. Also, I don't see how it is technically possible to replicate all the sections on other pages. --Blueeagleislander 04:47, 15 July 2007 (PDT)

Too Bulky
Edit
There are a number of totally irrelevant/already answered questions present. I understand that what counts as an unanswered question is pretty much subjective, but surely some of the following can be excluded from the off:
THE SWAN "Why was there a Quarantine sign on the door?" - It was part of the ruse to keep the occupants inside the Swan. Quarantine was on the inside, and Desmond thought that the Island was a quarantined zone and that only the Swan station was safe.
THE PEARL "Why does the information sent via the pneumatic tube just end up in a pile in a meadow?" - It's been suggested and is almost certainly true that the original purpose of The Pearl to DHARMA was as a psychological test. It doesn't matter what the occupants wrote down, the true test was about them.
THE HYDRA "Why were the Others building a runway there (as stated by Juliet)?" - Seeing how she also stated that the runway was for "the aliens", I think we can take it as given that Juliet was not being honest about building a runway. She went on to imply that she didn't know almost directly after the runway comment.
MISCELLANEOUS - PSYCHOLOGICAL "While Jack and Kate were out looking for Claire and Charlie after their kidnapping, and Jack and Ethan got into a fight, why did Kate seem to think that Jack had just "hit his head"? How did she not see or hear the fight at all?" - Is this really, realistically going to be answered in a shocking revelation at some point? Will this EVER be addressed again? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Silvertouch (talk • contribs) 20:44, 1 March 2008.
- While I agree with you that UQs need judicious pruning to keep out theories, irrelevant viewer quibbles, and the like, I think all but the last one you brought up are still unanswered, or that your answers aren't the correct ones. We don't know why [whoever] put the quarantine sign on the Swan hatch at [whenever time] (or otherwise tried to fool the Swan crew into staying put inside), when clearly the DHARMA Initiative people worked around the Island free from the encumbrance of hazmat suits. ("The Man Behind the Curtain") Since we can't fill in the [whoever] and the [whenever] (to do so would be theorizing), the most general, most open-ended question is the one that's already there. I can't recall a basis for certainty about the Pearl's purposes as a psychological experiment on its own inhabitants; a different but also reasonable explanation was that the Pearl's experiment continued for some time after the Purge, perhaps, as with the Swan, for years after, and there were just no longer any DHARMA personnel to come along and collect the observation notebooks from the tubes at the other end. I guess your qualm with the runway UQ is that it might not have really been a runway. They were flattening and leveling a strip of land without doing any other construction on it. Sawyer interpreted it as a runway, so whether its ultimate purpose will really be as one, we might as well call it that for now. (If you want to put "runway" in quotes, I'd support that.) - When and why did Jack take flying lessons?
- Who cares? This isn't relevant or significant.
- Why does Jack so desperately want to get off the Island?
- Why wouldn't he? Jack is clearly shown as a "man of science," so he wouldn't want to stay, and as leader of the survivors, he's dedicated to getting all of them rescued. It's part of his personality. Finrod 17:31, 12 June 2008 (PDT)

- I don't think this is an unanswered question, though other questions remain about that plot. "?" addressed it. Malkin was, by his own admission, a fraud. He gathered intelligence on people to exploit them. So though there was a reason for Claire to go to the Island (they were all brought there for a reason), Malkin had no supernatural knowledge.
- So what was the point of his con with Claire? We don't know - that could be an unanswered question, but it's kind of one step too deep into analysis to qualify. A deleted scene on the season 2 DVD shows him explaining to Eko that an LA couple paid him to convince Claire to board 815, so the writers planned that as an explanation at one point.
- Malkin was right that Claire had to be on 815, he was right that Aaron would end up with an LA couple and he was right that danger would result if Claire's "nature, spirit and goodness" weren't involved in raising Aaron - but he didn't actually know any of those things. --- Balk Of Fame ♪ talk 10:57, August 9, 2011 (UTC)
