Talk:O-Missions

Back to page

Hey, are you intending this page to become an Others A-Missions type page? It will be interesting to see how far you can roll with it.. But remember we havn't got much information on why The Others do what they do.. So the information might be too limited? --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 02:30, 24 February 2007 (PST)

  • Almost considering putting a deletion template on this, but am holding off for now. There are several differences with the A-Missions page. The A-missions can actually be used as an architecture to hang the entire storyline of Lost. Also the composition of the A-Teams have had a central "core", and was additionally explictly named by Charlie. However for the Others, none of this applies. In fact, in both the Losties and the Others, there is no team.
The Losties have no explicit "team" (only an accidental one), and the Others also have never revealed that they have a specific team. The problem is that this article implies that they have a special missions team, and since the reasons for creating the article for the Lostie's "team" (charlie's figurative analogy which named the theme & the fact that structuer of the Lost storyline) don't apply, I'm leaning towards thinking this article should be either removed or renamed (to something meaning: Missions or interactions the Others have had with respect to the Losties).
However, I'm curious to see how this page will end up, as it has potential... -- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯  Talk  03:17, 24 February 2007 (PST)

Tables? Edit

Im hopeless with formatting and all that jazz (just look at my userpage! proves it!) I was thinking that this page could do with some tables to make it look a bit better, as it looks very plain right now?--Lewis-Talk-Contribs 11:59, 24 February 2007 (PST)

I'd offer to do it, if Lostpedia reaches a group consensus to have tables on this article. --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 12:01, 24 February 2007 (PST)

Rename Edit

To The Others A-Missions to parallel with the losties A-Missions? --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 16:58, 28 February 2007 (PST)

Agree: The article has some potential, but with a different name and another way of presenting the content.  ODK Talk   Sandbox 17:58, 28 February 2007 (PST)
Agree or maybe we could rename it to B-Missions --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 18:42, 28 February 2007 (PST)
Unsure I agree changing it but i think Other A-Missions would cause confusion, although not sure what would be better.-Mr.Leaf 18:43, 28 February 2007 (PST)
Agree but possibly "O-Missions" --Blueeagleislander 01:17, 1 March 2007 (PST)
Agree. Change it to the Others A-Missons as they are another group of people on the island and shouldnt be made to look bad. --Pacific Gilly 1992 07:27, 24 April 2008 (PDT)

O-Missions Edit

this name it´s perfect to avoid confussion. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fuzter lost (talkcontribs) .

  • I agree with this "O-mission" renaming. TheAma1 09:21, 1 March 2007 (PST)
  • I like the "O-mission" idea--Phil 11:02, 1 March 2007 (PST)

Yay, my idea was chosen! --Blueeagleislander 15:20, 2 March 2007 (PST)

  • O- missions stands for Others missions. It is the perfect name.

Table FormatEdit

How about this:

Mission Overview Members
3X07 DannyIvanJason.jpg
Chasing Sawyer and Kate

Danny Pickett chased after Sawyer and Kate but lost them when Alex helped them hide. He was radioed by Aldo who told him Alex was with him, and she had "Austen" and "Ford". Danny, Ivan and Jason arrived after Sawyer, Kate and Alex had managed to save Karl and escape. He continued to chase after them and found them on the beach. At this point he was shot and killed by Juliet. ("Not in Portland")

That might work...? --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  10:42, 1 March 2007 (PST)

I like it --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 12:15, 1 March 2007 (PST)

Ditto TheAma1 12:19, 1 March 2007 (PST)

Good idea; I really like that format.-- Dagg talk contribs4 8 14:12, 2 March 2007 (PST)

Umm.. I don't know.. This table format is used in so many articles - animals, Desmond's flashes, Unanswered Questions.. I came up with another format, the one I used on "Chasing Kate and Sawyer" section. It's basically an infobox, summary and a box which shows the Others that were members of this O-Mission.  ODK Talk   Sandbox 15:31, 2 March 2007 (PST)

There seems to be a problem with that format. I only see half of the people's heads at the bottom. Plus if I click on the right 50% of the images, I get the image page instead of the article. If those issues could be fixed, it might be ok, but I think I personally still prefer the table overall. -- Dagg talk contribs4 8 16:49, 2 March 2007 (PST)
  • Can't we just use the template from the A-mission page? Princess Dharma (banned)
  • Dagg, they're not supposed to link to the article pages, as I did not know how to do that affectively.

I must say I do like Obi-Dan's table format... but I'm happy to go with the majority on this. What I do believe though is that something needs to be done... --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  00:35, 3 March 2007 (PST)

  • I was talking about the "Chasing Kate and Sawyer" format mentioned by Obi-Dan Kenobi. It is currently broken in multiple ways (the ways I mentioned above). -- Dagg talk contribs4 8 04:52, 3 March 2007 (PST)

Broken formatting Edit

Hi guys, here is what the O-Missions#Chasing Sawyer and Kate section currently looks like on my Firefox web browser:

O-mission screenshot.png

Notice all the extra white space in the middle, and notice that the images at the bottom are cut in half. My browser was maximized when I made the screenshot. The links on the images are also acting strangely. When I click on the right-50% of the images, it takes me to the images page. When I click on the left-50%, it takes me to the character's article page. Let me know if you need more details.-- Dagg talk contribs4 8 05:11, 3 March 2007 (PST)

Same prob for me--Lewis-Talk-Contribs 05:41, 3 March 2007 (PST)
I got that too. --Marik7772003 06:19, 3 March 2007 (PST)
Regarding the images - I used the same table that is being used in USA in Lost. All I have to do now is to upload smaller-sized versions, and the images problem is solved.  ODK Talk   Sandbox 12:22, 3 March 2007 (PST)

Why don't we just use the section boxes from the A-missions page a LOT less confusing a a LOT less hard work. Princess Dharma (banned)

Possible formats Edit

It sounds like people are proposing three different formats for this article:

Type #1: Table Edit

Mission Overview Members
3X07 DannyIvanJason.jpg
Chasing Sawyer and Kate

Danny Pickett chased after Sawyer and Kate but lost them when Alex helped them hide. He was radioed by Aldo who told him Alex was with him, and she had "Austen" and "Ford". Danny, Ivan and Jason arrived after Sawyer, Kate and Alex had managed to save Karl and escape. He continued to chase after them and found them on the beach. At this point he was shot and killed by Juliet. ("Not in Portland")

Note: Edited above to use wikipedia's "Click" template (taken by Mr.hanso for lp as Template:ClickA), so images now are true thumbs; make note this does not work with some rarer browsers such as Safari.--PandoraX 06:36, 6 March 2007 (PST)

Type #2: infobox, prose, and table Edit

Chasing Sawyer and KateEdit

O-Mission #8
3X07 O-Mission.jpg
Episodes
Sent by..
Outcome
Failed

After Sawyer's execution failed, Kate and Sawyer attacked Danny and Jason and escaped from the cages area in the Hydra station. Ivan was sent by Juliet to help Danny and Jason, and to go after the fugitives.
The trio chased after them, but lost them when Alex hid them in her hideout. They eventually came to the Hydra facility, where Aldo the guard, told them Sawyer, Kate and Alex had managed to rescue Karl from room 23 and ran away.
Danny continued to chase after them, and eventually found them on the beach. At this point, he was shot and killed by Juliet.

Type #3: A-Mission sectionbox Edit

Chasing Sawyer and Kate
Outcome: Failed
Episodes: "Not in Portland"
A Team Members: Ivan, Jason (Other), Danny Pickett
Also Involved:
Mission: To re-capture Sawyer and Kate
Corresponding O-Mission: {{{O-mission}}}
Corresponding F-Mission: {{{F-mission}}}
Background: After Sawyer's execution failed, Kate and Sawyer attacked Danny and Jason and escaped from the cages area in the Hydra station.

Benefits / drawbacks Edit

Type #1

Benefits:
  • Fits the most in the least amount of space
  • No templates are used.
Drawbacks:
  • Cannot link directly to a specific o-mission
  • Does not explicitly require a failure/success decision
  • Note: Edited in the ClickA template, but see comment below, may not work properly with Safari & other browsers; revert in example if needed. --PandoraX 07:59, 6 March 2007 (PST)

Type #2

Benefits:
  • Can write normal prose in the prose section.
  • Can link directly to a specific o-mission
Drawbacks:
  • Uses 2 templates, and a table.
  • Thumbimages must be an exact size (I think?)
  • Extra white space
  • Does not explicitly require a failure/success decision

Type #3

Benefits:
  • Directly contrasts with A-Missions
  • Can link directly to a specific o-mission
  • Explicitly requires a failure/success decision
Drawbacks:
  • Will need to make modifications to the A-Mission template
  • I get the feeling that some people don't want to use this; otherwise, it would have been used already?

Other thoughts? -- Dagg talk contribs4 8 12:40, 4 March 2007 (PST)

Type 3 is by far the bst. Type 2 looks like a heap of crap and type 1 is too tight. Princess Dharma (banned)

Type 3 is definetely the best. It isn't confusing, It's easy to read and everything. Also it looks good too. Type 3 is the box which makes sense when looking at the A-Missions page. And it just looks good. --   Dee4leeds  talk  contribs  all  13:43, 5 March 2007 (PST)

I also think a "Reflection to: Journeying by raft" should be added. --   Dee4leeds  talk  contribs  all  13:58, 5 March 2007 (PST)

Whilst the Type 2 right aligned box is fine, the box listing people who are on the mission is not. I've removed them as they are very complicated, and don't make the site easy to edit for new contributors. -- Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  14:01, 5 March 2007 (PST)

  • Oops, sorry bout that... but I'll leave it up as a note under #1. And I didn't realize 90% of Mac users use Safari... that's quite a bit. That being the case, I'd definitely be less for the use of that template--I'm going to leave a note under that article. --PandoraX 07:59, 6 March 2007 (PST)
  • PS: Dagg, do you know what #1 looks like on Safari? Now curious. I think #1 needs some sort of direct linking, personally. Your average casual Lost fan would have no idea who Ivan the Other is... for example; half of them don't even know that we know Pickett's first name or that he is Colleen's husband. --PandoraX 08:02, 6 March 2007 (PST)
  • Actually, it looks like that Safari warning on wikipedia is a little old. It works for me fine on Safari 2.0.4. I'd still prefer that lostpedia didn't regularly use this template, because it is very hackish and causes web accessibility problems. Just my opinion though. Maybe the name of the character could go underneath or something? Moot point though if we use the a-mission template.-- Dagg talk contribs4 8 18:53, 6 March 2007 (PST)
  • We should probably just make it look like the A-Missions (which is a great article). The 3rd one would do the job. BETTYFIZZW (Talk) 13:47, 11 March 2007 (PDT)

ColorsEdit

Please ensure all colors are websafe. I can only see the green. Princess Dharma (banned)

Team MembersEdit

  • Even though there has been no real team mentioned on LOST, I think that Tom and a few more of the others should be part of a team--bjdharma 11:32, 27 March 2007 (PDT)

Infiltrating Losties Camp?Edit

Shouldn't Juliet infiltratng the Losties camp be added to this list?--HeWhoLaughsLast 23:47, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

i definatly agree, i was going to make this comment myself if it hadnt already been made! - KevGGrif

Capturing Locke?Edit

  • Should this be an o- mission? In season 2 Ben told locke the reason he was on his way to the beach was to get Locke. It has not been confirmed if Ben was telling the truth or was lieing but we know that Locke was important so he may have been telling the truth. bjdharma 11:59, 16 April 2007 (PDT)

Stopping the Tailies?Edit

  • When was it ever said that the Others were trying to stop the tailies from reaching the main camp? Just because they took Cindy, doesn't mean they were trying to take everyone. Cindy seems to enjoy being with the Others and for all we now (now) her kidnapping may have just been a crime of opportunity. --Gluphokquen Gunih 21:54, 12 January 2008 (PST)

Juliet trying to shutdown the tempest Edit

  • I don't think this should be a O-Mission as there is clear evidence that Juliet in 'One of Us' and was defected from the others.
  • That's outrageous. Clearly Ben (leader of the Others) ordered Juliet to do it via Harper (an Other). This is definitely an O-Mission.
    • I believe this is an O-Mission. But Juliet shouldn't be relegated to the list of Others, instead she should be listed with the secondary participants (like is done with Rescuing Ben and Michael). Juliet doesn't qualify as an Other anymore. UnluckyNumbers 04:12, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Rescue Ben Edit

I added a rescue ben one, but there are problems with it. I am having difficulty with putting Kate and Sayid in the A-Team memebers involved part. Thanks for any help.--Jinx 17:49, 1 June 2008 (PDT)Jinx
