- Unsure: Maybe it's noteable that there appears to be a US Army involvement in the island? I would vote Keep, if someone could flesh out this article to more than a simple list of a few items and people. (I would try, but I don't have such an eye for detail, and I'm still catching up on Season 2 anyway.) --Shodan1138 18:12, 2 July 2006 (PDT)
- Delete: I think there is a US army theme going on, in particular the US knife Ana-Lucia found is intriguing. However, at this time you can't really devise an article on this lone fact so I say it should go --Nickb123 (Talk) 02:22, 3 July 2006 (PDT)
- Keep; Agreed that the article itself is poor. However Lostpedia has similar articles on other employers such as St. Sebastian Hospital, LAPD, etc., not to mention sketchy locations articles such as United States and Iowa. Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯ Talk 04:49, 3 July 2006 (PDT)
- Keep; I wouldn't be heartbroken if this was deleted, but I think the article has potential if it were just developed more. For example, details could be added about Sam Austen's career (he served in Washington State, Korea and Iraq that we know of), and besides the knife, there could be more connections that come later on. There are subtle other things that point in the direction, for example, the Others speak in military jargon, such as use of terms like "clicks". Also there's certainly enough theorizing that goes on, such as the hatches being similar to the Mautouk experiment bunkers in appearance. --PandoraX 20:32, 3 July 2006 (PDT)
- Keep - The weapons must come from somewhere... :-p --Jambalaya 15:35, 4 July 2006 (PDT)
- Decision: Keep Yeah, I think this page is good now, it was nominated when it looked much different, and was just a list of 2 or 3 things. --PandoraX 08:18, 6 February 2007 (PST)
Improved the Page
Well, I made good on my promise above and fleshed out this stub a lot more with addition of other military references. I personally wish we could change the title to "military" instead, because that would be a lot more inclusive, and we could then discuss Desmond's service in the Royal Scotts Army and Sayid's service in the Republican Guard. But I did my best to rescue this page from lostpedia euthanasia! :) --PandoraX 14:13, 4 July 2006 (PDT)
Thanks NIN for moving it to a general Military Page! I think we have a lot of good items on this now, and the page looks a lot different from before. --PandoraX 11:49, 8 July 2006 (PDT)
Question
"The accounts of sicknesss/experiments of DHARMA and the appearance/configuration of the hatches was inspired by the top secret Montauk Project" -- Is there any reference to back this statement up? --GunsmithCat 12:00, 24 October 2006 (PDT)
Change to a simple list
I am considering changing this page to a simple list, sectioned by season, and sorted by episode. Cross references will be added. Please post here if you have any different or additional suggestions for the page.--Dagg 21:13, 15 January 2007 (PST)
- Agreed with Pan, although I see I am late to this discussion;
I really like your latest updates to this page, it really provides information in an easy to digest way. -- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯ Talk 22:02, 10 February 2007 (PST)
Hanso
I think this page is a good one. I've added a few bits. I think the comment from Alvar Hanso's biography is crucial. We are talking about a bunch of munitions, and he is a "munitions magnate", after all. Also, he supplied weapons to resistance movements during WWII, doesn't that seem like it might relate to the enigmatic luger handgun? It also seems that there are various allusions to "defence contracts" and suchlike, in the Lost Experience, etc., which obviously tie into the military theme, but not sure how to fit them neatly into the article. Sounds like Hanso Foundation and other organisations were involved in industrial work on behalf of the military, potentially linking to various other military themes. --HypnoSynthesis 13:44, 3 February 2007 (PST)
Following my previous post, I think it would be cool to head this page with a secion on "Organisations" in relation to the military, as the rest seems to (probably) follow from that. E.g., I've already added references under Alvar Hanso and Literature (Bad Twin) on this page that indicate that the Hanso Foundation (or is it just Alvar himself?) and the Widmore Corporation were involved in supplying weapons and defence contract business. Undecided whether these belong where I put them or at the top in their own "Organisations" section. Any views? --HypnoSynthesis 06:47, 6 February 2007 (PST)
- I don't think we have any definitive connections of organizations to the military at this point, only people. Alvar Hanso was involved in munitions trading in his former life (no direct evidence THF involved). I read Bad Twin, and I don't recall Widmore being mentioned as a defense contractor at all (or THF). I think the only mention was very briefly in a TLE call to DJ Dan about someone who claimed a research agency (related to Widmore) was sponsoring the building of a giant magnetic weapon. I don't think it's enough to make that link, because many of DJ Dan's callers are spoofed as conspiracy nuts, and we have no real canon on what the tie to Widmore Corp is yet, mostly just speculative stuff. --PandoraX 08:15, 6 February 2007 (PST)
I've added a few more bits recently from DJ Dan and the Sri Lanka video. I think this page is really useful now. The stuff from the Lost Experience is obviously very relevant. I wonder if anyone else can spot more hidden references to weapons, defence contracts, etc. Of course, some, like DJ Dan, might be red herrings but they are worth putting in context.
Some thoughts and questions... Isn't Desmond, in the flashback, a bit old to be joining the British army as a new recruit? Where did Rousseau get her impressive shooting and trapping skills? She kind of brags to Sayid about being a deadly shot with the crossbow; strange for a "scientist", even one who's had a few years to practice on the island. Is the luger on the island related to Alvar Hanso's arms dealing during the Second World War? What does DJ Dan mean about Hanso being linked to the atom bomb? Does this relate to the various mentions of the Cuban Missile crisis and Cold War conflict? Ethan Rom is obviously pretty handy at self-defence; is this the result of military training? If the "monster" is a "security system", was it designed as part of a military weapons programme? --HypnoSynthesis 03:51, 20 February 2007 (PST)
- I just don't think we should go too overboard with the DJ Dan references, which may bias people who weren't involved in TLE. We have to remember that DJ Dan is a conspiracy theorist, and most of his callers are "nutcases" (in the storyline), with ideas that are not meant to be taken at face value. He also had a caller that said a toaster was controlling his thoughts, and one that called about a Monster-like entity made of nanobots (something Dan himself refutes as significant later). They put the references in intentionally to mess with us. --PandoraX 03:58, 20 February 2007 (PST)
- I agree. That's why I put them in a different section headed "DJ Dan Theories." Obviously, these are worth knowing about but need to be taken in context like I said. I thought the idea was that some genuine clues were probably hidden among a load of red herrings. You could relabel them "DJ Dan Conspiracy Theories" or something to emphasise the point, or add a warning, maybe. Dan's comments about arms dealing aren't all total fabrication, though, they are partially supported by the quotes from the Hanso website, etc. --HypnoSynthesis 06:19, 20 February 2007 (PST)
Minor Additions & Revisions:
- Added "like all South Koreans," to Jin's army service. In South Korea, all males are conscripted (like many countries). Minor point, but Jin did not enlist.

For Addition/further checking
With regard to Lockes military experience.
In "the Man from Tallahassee" the flashback to john apartment shows a display on the wall. This is a frame which contains various military badges. I am unsure if these are U.S. Army badges or others. There is one (top row, second from the left) looks like the badge of the 101st airborne division. There is another, third form the left, bottom row) that looks similar to the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division. I have no real expertise in military heraldry, however these look like the kind of badges the U.S. units would use (as oppose to say British, who usually have a crown in their badge somewhere)
Is it worth a note that Locke has a collection of these badges? Does this further fuel his fantasy of being "the colonel" or does it denote military experience.
Please add as you will as I have no experience editing wikis either. --DannyRamone 18:39, 15 June 2007 (PDT)
Can anyone else confirm that Locke has military badges on his wall? I don't have my DVDs at the moment, so can't check. That would certainly be relevant given the comments in the article, etc. I've asked Dark UFO for a screencap. As far as I'm aware we don't know what Locke did before working in the toy store, which I think was about 1994, aged about 37. For all we know (despite his employment record saying he has no military experience) he could have been somehow involved with the military before that date. --HypnoSynthesis 15:37, 24 June 2007 (PDT)
This is confirmed there's a pretty clear screen cap at Dark UFO already showing the poster with various military flash badges, and "Special Operations Forces" written at the top. I'll add a note to the article. --HypnoSynthesis 09:49, 26 June 2007 (PDT)
