Connection to the deGroots??

  • I googled the surname Van Eeghen and found a page:

        • It could very well be Dutch, however, due to the old spelling used, it is more likely Flemish because the Flemish names are spelled with old spelling.

This is because of the Spanish basically. When the Dutch modernised their spelling the south was still under Spanish control, and thus the names in the north changed spelling, and in the south did not. When the country was split into Holland and Belgium this difference remained. So the more logical Dutch spelling would be Van Egen or Eegen, without the H. Another example: Kuiper in Dutch is usually Cuyper in Flemish (Cooper in English). --Mace1337 09:41, 15 August 2008 (PDT)
