Talk:Anagram

Back to page

I created this entry on December 11, 2005 and put a false anagram to see if anyone bothered to delete it, but yet it remained in this page until May 28, 2006. Claire Littleton does not anagram to Little Acolite, but yet it remained, because it seemed to fit some people's speculation. This is an example of wishful thinking, it is convenient, so I won't check if it is true. --†††GodEmperorOfHell††† 06:46, 28 May 2006 (PDT)

Can anyone do anything with "Benjamin Linus"? Seems like there's something to be found in that. Was thinking along the lines of "Jin is unable" or something like that, but that leaves out a few letters. Anyone? --HansoChristian

"Jinni's Albumen" (from the egg of a genie?)

"Nuns lie in jamb" (he makes nuns sleep in doorways?)

"Annuls me in jib" (Could be a reference to kicking the Losties off the sailboat?)

"Nil bum in jeans" (He has a small backside?)

--Wintermute 08:17, 18 October 2006 (PDT)

Hey, in the context of his spinal tumor, that last one is actually pretty interesting.--Ex-Pope Cardinal Richard Corey 23:52, 21 February 2007 (PST)

How does Henry Gale Minnesota = See an Other Man lying? It's close, but there's an extra "H" in the first set, so this is not a true anagram. Though cute. --PandoraX 15:45, 12 November 2006 (PST) -what extra H? --Gluphokquen Gunih 00:20, 13 February 2008 (PST)

Probability Edit

Using internet anagram solvers, a vast number of meaningless anagrams can be generated for practically any string of 5 or more letters. I suggest we stick to anagrams of confirmed significance or highly plausible anagrams (e.g. 2 words anagramming to 1 or 2 others that make sense in context). Otherwise the anagram game is worse than astrology - retrofitting anagrams from choices of thousands to existing facts or theories. Dubbin 07:26, 28 May 2006 (PDT)

Strongly agree with this; especially, I think we should get rid of anagrams of names that were not invented for the show (Damon Lindhof, Geronimo Jackson), but even with names from within LOST, I think we should limit it to anagrams that we have good reason to believe were deliberate. Things that reference plot points that develop seasons after the character was originally meant to have been written out are not exactly useful. I've just added some random anagrams for Desmond, as much as anything to see how easy it was, and how many people can read something into it, but I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if they disappeared along with about 90% of this page. --Wintermute 05:06, 26 November 2007 (PST)

"Aaron Littleton" is an anagram of "A literal non-tot". --Wintermute 12:22, 10 July 2006 (PDT)

What about anagrams from the Lost experience? Edit

I think they should be added to the anagram article. Is that OK?

Why not? --Blueeagleislander 23:53, 21 February 2007 (PST)

Cleanup Edit

Some of these are just ridiculous. For example "Department of Heuristics And Research on Material Applications = Penelope hits Desmond after Antarctica crisis. Ruler not a pharma". There needs to be clearer distinction between which are confirmed, deliberate anagrams (Ethan Rom, Wally Bolé, etc) and those that are just conjecture.--TechNic|talk|conts 14:55, 1 March 2008 (PST)

  • As far as I know, the only "confirmed" anagrams are Ethan Rom, Gary Troup, and Mittlose. What do you mean by confirmed? --Gluphokquen Gunih 11:49, 2 March 2008 (PST)
  • Well in all honesty I don't really know. I'd just like to see some of the really daft ones weeded out. Maybe they simply need to be moved to Anagram/Theories instead. I think it's fair to say that a lot of the anagrams on the page were not intended by the writers. Allowing the page to be a free-for-all is hardly encyclopedic and basically just Apophenia. (Wow! "Lostpedia.com" = "I am plot codes." - Maybe I should put that on the article!)--TechNic|talk|conts 17:21, 2 March 2008 (PST)
  • I agree that some are way out there, but there's no way for us to know which are "offical" and which are not, beyond the three confirmed I mentioned above. Some could go either way. I don't think theories is the right place to put any "non official" anagrams, and any trimming of anagrams would be done by opinion of what is and isn't important, which is even less encyclopedic.--Gluphokquen Gunih 21:51, 2 March 2008 (PST)

Wickmund Anagram Edit

Should this really be here? Its says 'Wickmund: Mindf*ck Only when replacing the W with an F.' this is not an anagram. an anagram can only use the ORIGINAL letters. I think it should be deleted.

It is not an anagram, true. When I did a clean up of the page I thought about deleting it but left it because it was interesting and no one had said anything against it. Though now that there is a second voice, I think it'll be safe to delete. --Gluphokquen Gunih 09:34, 5 March 2008 (PST)

Discussion Edit

Reformatting article from a list into a table. "Possible/Other Anagrams" will be a section of anagrams that don't quite make sense, and will still be in list format. -- Iron Man  Send a message  View contributions  12:07, 6 March 2008 (PST)

  • If we're going to have a section called "Logical Anagrams", shouldn't there be some justification for each one? Example: How is Charlie Pace = Cereal Chips logical, it has nothing to do with anything. I really think this page needs to be all or nothing, because as I've said before in discussion, there are only 3 confirmed anagrams, and who are we to decide what the writers intended? --Gluphokquen Gunih 13:04, 6 March 2008 (PST)

By logical I mean the anagram makes sense grammatically. Like the anagram "Dad videoed Sun, hmm?" for Benjamin Linus would be included in the other section. -- Iron Man  Send a message  View contributions  13:11, 6 March 2008 (PST)

Grammatical correctness shouldn't be the issue. "Moved hidden as mud" makes no sense grammatically and you've put it in the "logical section". --Gluphokquen Gunih 20:45, 8 March 2008 (PST)
Also "Dad videoed Sun, hmm = Desmond David Hume not Benjamin Linus. --Gluphokquen Gunih 20:46, 8 March 2008 (PST)
  • Has anyone else noticed that "Charlotte Lewis" only contains 14 letters, while "Steals Walt's helicopter" has 21 letters? How can this be put up as a logical anagram? My anagram I proposed for "Galzethron" (A Long Hertz) was deleted from the theories section without any discussion that I saw. It ties in with the 11-hertz setting required for Daniel's machine. "Hollister", the student Daniel was talking to in 1994, is an anagram for "Others Ill". I had proposed that the Others will become ill or are already ill. These are both plausible (I believe), and are a heck of a lot more relevant than "Cereal Chips" for Charlie. Who the heck is deciding which anagrams stay and go?
    • The Charlotte one is because Walt Steals Helicopters is an anagram of Charlotte's FULL name - Charlotte Staples Lewis meggie ~ Talk & contribs 21:22, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

I've enjoyed reading theories and discussions on lostpedia in the past, but my theories being brushed aside while utterly retarded ones stay up has shaken my faith a bit. This will probably be deleted before it generates a lot of discussion, but at least I've said it.--Stan the Man 13:47, 19 March 2008 (PDT)

Article To Do List: Edit

  • Replace current black picture with a good wide shot of Anthony Cooper/Adam Seward.
  • If anyone would like to reformat the table into the CharPortalAA format, feel free.
  • Theories page needs some work.

-- Iron Man  Send a message  View contributions  10:01, 6 March 2008 (PST)

    • Cleaned up the theories page quite a bit. —烏Γ (kaw at me), 10:44, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Edit

For reformatting the article, it looks great. Sorry for the long absence, something unexpected came up and I had to stay in the hosptial over the week end :( -- Iron Man  Send a message  View contributions  12:01, 10 March 2008 (PDT)

New LookEdit

I must say, the article looks good. I'm still not sure what defines logical anagrams versus possible anagrams though. Also, there were anagrams completely removed that make more sense than some that stayed or were added. Are they coming back or were they cut for a reason? I'd put them back in myself, but I'm terrible at tables in wiki. --Gluphokquen Gunih 11:15, 13 March 2008 (PDT)

Delete Edit

Delete: There are few anagrams in the results that are anything but meaningless strings of words. I don't know if any of them except for Mittelos and Ethen Rom, which are addressed elsewhere, are even correct. I deleted the anagram for Abaddon as a part of correcting the spelling.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 12:32, 6 July 2008 (PDT)

  • Strong keep: This is a legitimate article. There have been many confirmed anagrams on lost. If you want to remove some of these anagrams, simply discuss it on the talk page. -- Sam McPherson  T  C  E  12:34, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
  • Cleanup : Remove all the fan based ones, and only leave the factual ones... Ethan Rom / Mittleos / Hoffs Drawler... etc  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  16:47, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
Perhaps there could be a separate section for logical anagrams as well? -- Sam McPherson  T  C  E  16:48, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
  • Who defines logical? Who defines factual?--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 18:02, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
  • I think it should be fairly obvious what factual anagrams are. These are the ones confirmed directly by the producers. There are about five of these. And logical would mean that they have some coherent sense in the context of the show (such as "A real lie used upon us" or "An other perhaps.") -- Sam McPherson  T  C  E  18:08, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
  • Okay, we're talking about "Producer verified anagrams" and "Coherent anagrams". That's a start.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 18:24, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
Yes, if you wanna call it that, I'll go with it. -- Sam McPherson  T  C  E  18:25, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
  • Rebuild underway. Pls nominate producer verified and coherent--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 19:05, 6 July 2008 (PDT)
  • Does it make sense to include Carleton Cuse and, potentially, other real people associated with the show? We can accept that "Ethan Rom" was intended to mean "other man," but did Mr. Cuse's parents name him so that thirty-odd years later his name could be anagrammed into a Lost-related phrase?--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 07:31, 7 July 2008 (PDT)
I think those were intended just for fun. -- Sam McPherson  T  C  E  07:33, 7 July 2008 (PDT)
Keep. I too agree with Sam, this is a legit article, and I hope my edit of it down to the core of the true anagrams will help to keep it around. It just needs ot be patrolled to ensure the speculative nature of anagramming doesn't get out of hand. I am certain there will be more anagrams that will appear throughout the show. Another Anagram! Edit

Hey, all! I found another anagram. Daniel Faraday: add one year. I think this is significant. --Rebecca Mader 01:44, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Nice try, but it doesn't work. There's no "O" in Daniel Faraday, and that anagram doesn't use an "L" or "F". You must use all of the letters for it to work.--Baker1000 01:52, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Christine I Edit

Hey!

Has anybody tried Christine I? In one of their interviews (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20010504,00.html), producers say there will be an anagram regarding Adam and Eve's bodies in Feb. 7 episode . I'm not an expert, and I came to no conclusion, although some curious things arise (Christian, Iris...). Some help, please!

Theories page Edit

I'll take up the reins with keeping the Theories page logical and professional. I already reordered all of them, added a few, and deleted the idiotic ones, and I'll just keep the page on track.

Any problems, see my talk page. —烏Γ (kaw at me), 22:32, October 10, 2010 (UTC)
