Hydra Island is a small island off the coast of the main island where the Hydra station is located. Ben shows Sawyer the Hydra Island lookout to tell him there is no chance of him escaping. Ben also states that the Hydra Island is only about twice the size of Alcatraz Island which makes the land area about 0.06 square miles (just under 1/4 mile by 1/4 mile). ("Every Man for Himself") However, in subsequent appearances, particularly when seen by air in "Namaste", the island appears much larger, with multiple mountain ridges and expanses of jungle.
The distance from Hydra Island to the main island is unclear. Both Juliet ("Not in Portland") and Sawyer ("I Do") report that Hydra Island is "about 2 miles offshore" of the main Island. Ben, however, directs Lapidus to a small dock on the main Island approximately a half mile due south from Hydra Island. This portion of coastline is close to the Barracks. ("Namaste")
The Others have mentioned using a submarine to travel between the two islands. ("The Man from Tallahassee") Alex has an outrigger sailing canoe which she gives to Sawyer, Kate and Karl to escape the island. Alex says that there is no tunnel between Hydra Island and the main Island. ("Not in Portland")
This island is not where the Others live, but rather where they work on what they refer to as "projects". Most Others prefer to remain at "home", though they have at least one large boat that can provide transport to and from either of the islands.
After the escape of Kate and Sawyer, the Others seem to have abandoned Hydra Island. Hydra Island moved along with the main island to an unknown location and time.("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3").
Ajira Airways Flight 316 made an emergency landing on Hydra Island using the runway, and the passengers established camp there. ("The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham")
Trivia
- Hydra Island went unnamed on the show until "Some Like It Hoth" (when Dr. Chang threatened to have Hurley reassigned to Hydra Island where he would "weigh [polar bear] turds for their ridiculous experiments"). Early fan names for Hydra Island included "Falcatraz" (false Alcatraz) or "Lostcatraz". The producers once dubbed it "Damonville". (Official Lost Podcast/December 06, 2006)
- There have been two notable occasions where a "second island" can been seen in the background during shots.
- When Ana Lucia leads her group across the Island, a smaller island can be seen on the horizon (pictured). Note a second, smaller silhouette to the left of this island. ("Abandoned")
- As Michael and Walt leave Pala Ferry a small island can briefly be seen behind the boat as it moves away (see here). ("Live Together, Die Alone") However, no island was visible when Sayid arrived at the pier on the sailboat. In reality this is an island offshore of Oahu known as Mokolii or Chinaman's Hat, which is much too small to be the Hydra Island, suggesting its appearance was merely a filming mistake. ("Live Together, Die Alone")
- The producers said they always intended one of the smaller islands on Danielle's maps to be Hydra Island. (Official Lost Podcast transcript/March 26, 2007)
