Theories

• The race was designed to take Desmond to the island.
  • Charles Widmore arranged for it for that very purpose.
• Charles Widmore designed the race in hope that one of the sailers will find the island. Not necessarily Desmond, but anyone of the sailers. Desmond finding it was coincidence/fate.
  • He was doing this in hopes of finding the island.
• The race was not only sailing
  • Why was Desmond running in the stadium to prepare for the race?
    • Long distance sailing requires an extremely fit body. Exercise is necessary to increase the bodies endurance so one can survive such a trip. There is no evidence that the race was anything other then sailing.
