Portuguese is the language spoken by at least three associates of Penelope Widmore in her apparent quest to locate Desmond Hume on the Island.
The language was first heard in the season two finale, used by the two operators of the listening station that locates the electromagnetic signal from the Island. ("Live Together, Die Alone")
The language reappears in the plot when Desmond finds a copy of the book Catch-22 in the jungle, translated to Portuguese as "Ardil-22". The book contains a copy of Desmond and Penny's picture together, and appears to have been dropped by Naomi as she descended in a parachute from her disabled helicopter. ("Catch-22") Later, while Naomi is with Mikhail, she speaks Portuguese, which Mikhail apparently understands.("D.O.C.") Portuguese is also spoken by the crew of the Searcher, when it finds the Oceanic Six. ("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3")
Paulo may have also spoken Portuguese.
The language spoken at the listening station and Penelope's ship appears to be Brazilian Portuguese in structure and vocabulary, although the accent and wording were reported by native speakers as very unusual.
Penelope Widmore probably also speak or at least understand Portuguese, since she respond to one of the crew members when he asks to her go to the front of the boat.
In the Dharma Initiative Recruiting Project ARG, typing the word "lento" ("slow" in Portuguese) during the Test 3 game will slow down the moving balls and allow players to achieve better scores.
