Burn It Down[]

In 2023, Damon Lindelof issued an apology for enabling an unsafe work environment, of which Hsu Taylor and various others described as racist and hostile.[1] Carlton Cuse denied the allegations made by Taylor and the various other past production members of the series.[2]

For Maureen Ryan's Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood (2023) book, Hsu Taylor likened the experience working on the show to an abusive relationship. She also remarked that Cuse had been angry that her episode "Ab Aeterno" received continuing high praise. Allegedly, she recalled him taking credit for the episode while overhearing him speak to actor Nestor Carbonell on the phone in the anteroom to Cuse's office. Hsu Taylor recalled the incident in an excerpt released by Vanity Fair prior to the book release:

Cuse said to the actor, “Oh, yeah. I wrote that. I wrote most of that script.” I mean, it was a flat-out lie. My jaw dropped. I just turned around and walked away.

Melinda Hsu Taylor also stated she and Gregg Nations were called into a room, and recalled that they “basically [told] us how much we owed them for letting us have our names on that script". Furthering on from this, "they implied it would probably be good if we got them a little present". So Hsu Taylor went out and bought gifts for Cuse and Lindelof, "something Star Wars related [for Lindelof], given his love of that franchise" while Cuse received "Swarovski pencils".

As the episode got more and more praise, she recalled being skipped for when he was doling out script assignments and walking around the table. She recalled other writers' sympathy towards her, stating to Ryan: “They were like, ‘Yes, you’re absolutely being punished for having cowritten that script.’”[1]
