Mathias is one of the staff manning the tracking station in "Live Together, Die Alone", who speaks Portuguese.
Moments before their computer starts beeping, Mathias plays chess with Henrik. After the computer started to beep, while Henrik types something into the computer, Mathias calls Penelope Widmore, speaking English, and reporting to her about an electromagnetic anomaly, informing her, "I think we found it."
Trivia
- Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse mentioned the likeness in a commentary, and stated they cast the actor who "did not look like Matthew Fox."("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3")
- Mathias, as well as Henrik, seem to be borne from a Norwegian environment, instead of a Portuguese or Brazilian one.
- Mathias is the Norwegian variant of Matthew. Mathias' name in Portuguese is Matias.
- The Gospel of Matthias is a lost text from the New Testament apocrypha, ascribed to Matthias, the apostle chosen by lots to replace Judas Iscariot. A different text, The Gospel of Matthias, is also the original name for the Gospel of Matthew.
- Mathias is notable for being possibly the only character on the show to have never met any of the Main Characters.
