Lostpedia Chat is now available for all users of Lostpedia. All editors and lurkers are free to visit. The chat can be used for discussion on Lostpedia, collaboration, or simply for chatting - we strongly encourage editors to form friendships at Lostpedia, it's part of the fun of working as a team! Several sysops frequently idle in the chat channel, making it a good place to report vandalism or get some help. It is also the home of the Lost Trivia game, with several thousand questions, the largest on the Internet. PLEASE NOTE: This is the only official Lostpedia chat channel. Other channels might exist that squat on the same name, but the GameSurge hosted Lostpedia is the only official channel.

  • The Lostpedia IRC chat room is at:
irc.gamesurge.net #lostpedia
(Alternatively use the GameSurge Mibbit in-browser client)
  • If you want to talk about spoilers, use #lost-spoilers instead.
irc.gamesurge.net #lost-spoilers
  • For a place to hide while the episode airs (until it airs PST/west-coast), join #lp-pst:

Channel Rules and Guidelines

  • Please be respectful of others in the Lostpedia community.
  • You may disagree but DO NOT abuse or harass other users. This includes personal attacks, user impersonation and unwanted private messages.
  • Please refrain from using excessive profanity.
  • Please refrain from posting defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful, racially or ethnically objectionable material. Any NSFW links should be marked as such.
  • Know the spoiler policy. Use #lost-spoilers to discuss them, not #lostpedia. The Lostpedia IRC channels adhere to the wiki spoiler policy with the added policy that the next episode's title is also a spoiler.
  • Please refrain from overusing the bots. Several bots are available for use in the Lostpedia IRC channels, but repeatedly triggering them is considered rude and can distract from the actual conversation.
  • Please do not spam (flood) the channel.
  • Please turn off all auto-responders and auto-away messages. We have enough bots in the channel already, we don't need any more automated text in the channel. Turning off these automated messages helps eliminate noise that can distract from the discussions in the channel. We also don't need hourly reminders that you are asleep or what music you are listening to.
  • Please be patient and don't repeat if nobody replies immediately.
  • For large blocks of text please utilize sites like http://pastebin.com or Mibbit's pastebin.
  • If you are wanting to paste text from an article, provide the link instead.
  • Please refrain from using channel notices.
  • Please avoid frequently changing your nick during a short time span.
  • The enter key is not punctuation.
  • Please use English and be legible. While everyone might not speak English as their primary language it is the language of the chat, so please try to be coherent and avoid typing in ALL CAPS / chatspeak / aolbonics and using excessive punctuation / emoticons.

Enforcement of the rules and guidelines will be done at the discretion of the channel operators

Spoilers

Spoiler discussions are strictly forbidden in #lostpedia. If you want to discuss them join #lost-spoilers instead.

The channel might also be under Spoilcon depending on the time of the season (premiere or finale), so please consult the appropriate page.

First time tips

IRC is an asynchronous medium. Don't expect a conversation immediately, it's much like Instant Messaging (IM). In other words if someone happens to be monitoring the chat, you'll have a conversation immediately. But this is rarely the case, most (if not all) of the 50+ users on the channel are away for sure. Don't let that stop you from posing your question or sharing your thoughts! If you're patient you'll most likely get a response later. you can use the channel statistics for an activity chart.

Using colors

The use of colors have been disabled in the Lostpedia chat. This is because there is no default background color for an IRC client, and a message of a certain color might become hard to read for users with a similar background color.

Gamesurge AUP

The #lostpedia channel resides on Gamesurge, and as such their Acceptable Use Policy policies apply. Please read this article to make yourself familiar with this policy.

Connecting with a Java client

Connecting to our chat room with a Java IRC client is the easiest method, since there is no need for installation. it is highly recommended to install a dedicated IRC client (see below) for better functionality.

Keep in mind that by default, most browsers have a limit on how many active connections they can have open. This may cause you to randomly disconnect from a Java IRC client. Firefox users can read this forum post to see how to increase their limit.

Connecting with an IRC client

For help setting up XChat see our step-by-step guide.

For frequent users or for better advanced functionality, use a dedicated IRC program (called a client). The following is a list of popular IRC clients.

  • Windows
    • mIRC - popular irc client for Windows
    • Pidgin - something like AIM or GTalk but protocol independent
  • Mac OS X
    • Colloquy - full-featured IRC client that is free of charge and very easy to use
    • Snak
    • irssi - command line open source IRC client for geeks. You may want to use Fink for installation
