Theories

After Sawyer convinced Juliet to stay on the island with him when they were in 1974, the two developed a relationship. Three years later, Sawyer was planning to propose to her. However, when Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid returned to the Island, their lives in the DHARMA Initiative fell apart. Juliet later detonated the bomb Jughead and died of her injuries. A few hours after her death (and thirty years later), Kate was present when Sawyer dug up the ring in his old home at the Barracks and threw it into the water. ("What Kate Does")
