Mrs. Carlson is the mother of Juliet. She and her husband informed their two daughters that they were getting a divorce which represented a traumatic event for both Rachel and Juliet. She's the person Juliet's hears the line she eventually quotes to Sawyer, that sometime two people, even if they love each other, can't stay together. ("The Incident, Part 2")
