The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, or I.A.T.S.E., (Full name: International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada) is a labor union. Originally chartered by the American Federation of Labor as the National Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes in 1893, its name has evolved over the course of 110 years of geographic and craft expansion as well as technological advancement. The current title, adopted in 1995, more accurately reflects the full scope of activities in the entertainment industry. In general, the I.A.T.S.E. covers "below the line" production employees.
As Lost is filmed in Hawaii, it is under the jurisdiction of I.A.T.S.E. Local 665, under District No. 2, which also includes California, Nevada, and Arizona. The positions covered by Local 665 include Camera Op, Sound Mixer, Electrician, Grip, Art Director, Wardrobe, Construction, Make-Up, Script Supervisor, Production Office Coordinator, and Art Department Coordinator (ref).
Other local film industry-related labor unions in Hawaii include the Screen Actors Guild (Hawaii Branch), Teamsters Local 996, and IBEW Local 1260.
In 2005, IATSE 665 member Archie Ahuna was nominated for an Emmy for visual effects for his work spending "weeks carefully testing different biodegradable, ecofriendly chemical blends to create black smoke for the show’s burning aircraft parts. Ahuna and his effects team have all been through rigorous fire-fighting training, which has been invaluable, given all the smoke and fire effects required for Lost’s first season." This Emmy was among 12 nominations for Lost that year.
