The DHARMA Initiative genetically engineered large birds called "hy-birds" to test how animals adapt to the Island's unique properties. ("The New Man in Charge")

Epilogue ChangAndTheBird

Chang explains the nature of the "hy-birds." ("The New Man in Charge")

The birds' wings span 16 feet, and their cry sounds like the name "Hurley".[1] DVDs even subtitle one's cry as "Hurley", but Sawyer mocked Hurley for noting the resemblance. ("Live Together, Die Alone, Part 1") DHARMA kept the birds at the Hydra station, which featured large aviary cages. ("The New Man in Charge")  ("A Tale of Two Cities")

Hurley's first sight of one of them convinced him that whoever came up with the name Dark Territory was "a genius." He heard it shortly afterward, before and during the smoke monster's attack. ("Exodus, Part 2") A bird appeared again during the survivors' mission to rescue Walt. Michael tried to shoot it, revealing that Jack had unloaded his gun before giving it to him. ("Live Together, Die Alone, Part 1")

Trivia[]

Altjira

Altjira, the Australian Aboriginal god of dreamtime.

  • In Australian Aboriginal mythology, Altjira is the sky god of the Arrernte. He was the central god of the Dream time (called Alchera by the Aranda) who created the Earth, then retired to the sky. It is depicted as a large green bird with emu's feet.
  • After Jin told Hurley a story in Korean while they were camping, Hurley said, "Dude, I love the part about the bird. It was a bird, right?" ("Catch-22")
  • One form of the Egyptian god Horus is a green falcon. This fits with the Egyptian themes of the show.
  • The birds' only appearances are in season finales: "Exodus, Part 2" and "Live Together, Die Alone, Part 1".
