Fire and Water as overarching forces?[]

In the wake of "LA X," I've noticed a number of times that fire seems to be associated with the Man in Black - Jacob's body is consumed by the fire, and in the temple the Others surround the fires with ash.

Water seems connected to Jacob, with the healing waters in the temple. And when Ben "summoned" the monster in season 4, he emptied the water from the hole, suggesting that Jacob's water was protecting Othertown from the vents of the smoke monster.
