Righters Untie! Season 5 Writing Contest was scriptwriting contest started by Dan Hoger. It was developed in light of the Lost hiatus between Season 4 and Season 5. It was inspired by the Lostpedia Season Four Writing Contest.

Lostpedia decided against doing a season 5 contest [source needed]. However, users who wished for a second contest started it up on the Righters Untie! website. It began after the airing of "There's No Place Like Home, Part 2" .

Centric characters for each episode are decided by user votes. Centric characters for the premiere and finale episodes are guaranteed to be author's choice. On occasion, episodes include a writer's challenge - a storytelling objective of some sort that every writer must incorporate into their scripts. A create-a-character contest was also held to determine a new major character for season five.

Contest history[]

The Best Laid Plans[]

The Best Laid Plans is the first episode of the Righters Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on June 25, 2008. In it, Locke and the Others deal with the surprising appearance of an oil rig, which was picked up by the Island as it moved across the ocean. When the Others determined that the oil rig was sent by Widmore, the oil rig workers are detained. Locke seeks Jacob, who delivers some final orders. In the future, Locke approaches each of the Oceanic Six in a bid to persuade them to return to the island. Ultimately, he meets his death at the hands of Abaddon, fulfilling a plan set forth by Jacob earlier.

The contest opened with the writing of the premiere episode on May 19, 2008. The deadline for all entries was June 19th, and voting for the 31 submissions began the following day. The public voting placed Left Turn at Albuquerque as the favorite. However, on the 25th of the same month, the voting subsided and The Best Laid Plans (by C.S) was named the winner of the first episode of the contest. Left Turn at Albuquerque, The Man Who Would Be King, and Something Wicked This Way Comes received honorable mentions.

Miles from the Grave[]

Miles from the Grave is the second episode of the Righters Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on July 7, 2008. The aftermath of moving the island is shown from the beach camp's perspective. Miles gets a haunting message from a dead Michael and decides to travel with Charlotte to the DHARMA grave. There, they uncover a small information tablet containing the Valenzetti Equation. In flashbacks, we learn more of Miles' complex ability and how he came to work for Widmore Corporation.

26 entries were submitted for the second episode, which featured Miles as the centric character. Writing began on June 25, 2008 - with the deadline set for July 2nd. This episode featured the first writer's challenge: which stated that Miles had to have a significant conversation with a previously deceased character. Voting subsided and the winner was picked. The episode Miles from the Grave (by HeDoesntLoveYourRobot) won episode 2. Next, One Side Is Light, and Miles To Go Before I Sleep received honorable mentions.

Kinship[]

Kinship is the third episode of the Righters Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on July 19, 2008. In the future, Aaron is kidnapped by Widmore, forcing an estranged Jack and Kate to work together. On the island, Sawyer and Juliet agree to go to the Barracks with Locke. In flashbacks, we learn that Kate's errand for Sawyer was to visit Clementine.

20 submissions were sent in for the third episode, which featured Kate as the centric character. Submissions for episode 3 scripts opened on July 7, 2008. Voting for the best episode began July 14th. The script Kinship (by NickN67) was announced as the winner. Bondsman, Change of Plans, and Things We Lost In The Fire received honorable mentions.

New recurring-character contest[]

A sub-contest was held alongside Episode 3. The premise was to create a "casting call" for a new recurring character to be introduced in the next episode. Out of the 20 characters submitted, the top three (decided by popular vote) were Kenneth Montand Birch (played by Powers Boothe), Elena Santos (played by Mia Maestro), and Elena Jameson (played by Alexa Davalos). Kenneth Birch became the official character after Escape from Ogygia won.

As revealed in the contest, Kenneth Montand Birch is an associate of Charles Widmore and also pretended to work for Benjamin Linus. He is one of the few people who can speak to Jacob. He ran the Tampa Job involving Hibbs, Sawyer and Leon Bergson. He is a cold-blooded killer and the only person he seems to have cared for is his sister Jillian. Ben killed Jillian and tried to frame Widmore for the murder in order to get Birch to join him. Instead, Birch pretended to join Ben, while waiting for his chance to avenge Jillian. During this time, he abducted Aaron from Kate and delivered the child to Widmore. He also arranged an auto accident to convince Sayid to briefly join Widmore so Sayid could meet Jacob, abduct Aaron back and then orchestrate the return of the Oceanic Six to the Island. Finally, Birch employed the enforcer watching Hurley, who had a special red cube on his person until Sayid killed him.

Escape from Ogygia[]

Escape from Ogygia is the fourth episode of the Righters Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on July 31, 2008. Off the island, Desmond and Penny flee to a private Mediterranean island owned by Penny's ex-fiance, Proci Hekatoctis. But Desmond will no longer be a coward confined to an island, so he makes a deal with Widmore to kill Ben, and leaves Penny behind. In flashbacks, Desmond and Kelvin Inman confront the Monster in the Swan.

22 episodes were submitted for the fourth episode. During the voting for the episode 4 centric, two characters tied: Juliet and Desmond. Writers were given the ability to pick either of these two characters. This episode featured the second writer's challenge, in which one of the top three winners from the New Recurring Character contest were introduced into the show as a new major character. Submissions for episode 4 scripts opened on July 19, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on July 26th, and for the first time, the voting for favorite episode and the centric character for episode 5 was "blind". On July 31, The script Escape from Ogygia (by Mark Monack) was announced as the winner, and introduced Kenneth Montand Birch as the new recurring character. Hyakuhachi Bonnou, To Save One Life, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Ouroborous received honorable mentions.

The Woman in the Flashes[]

The Woman in the Flashes is the fifth episode of the Righters Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on August 12, 2008. Daniel arrives back at the beach after a terrible encounter at sea, and seeks Miles and Charlotte’s help for answers. They learn that the Orchid station is leaking deadly radiation and it will require two cubes (one retrieved by Miles, and the other in the possession of Sayid off the Island. Meanwhile, Sawyer recognizes Leon Bergson as a conman he knew when he, Juliet, and Locke arrive at the Barracks. In flashbacks, we see Daniel’s relationship with his late wife Eloise and how it drove him mad.

11 scripts were submitted for the fifth episode. During voting for the best fourth episode, voting occurred for the centric for the fifth episode and Daniel was selected as the centric character. This episode featured the third writer's challenge: if the script occurs in the present and off-island, Daniel must meet Kenneth Birch; if it occurs in the present and on-island, the Valenzetti Equation plot and/or the oil rig plot must be progressed; or if it occurs in the past, Daniel must meet Pierre Chang. Submissions for episode 5 scripts opened on July 31, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on August 7, 2008. The script The Woman in the Flashes (by chubbychickenz431) was announced as the winner. Le Voyageur Prudent and A Long Holiday received honorable mentions.

The Art of Deception[]

The Art of Deception is the sixth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on August 24, 2008. Sayid is separated from the Oceanic Six in an accident arranged by Ben and Kenneth Birch. Sayid seeks out Charles Widmore in London, only to find he may have been double-crossed. Meanwhile, as Desmond and Sun travel to Los Angeles, Sun reveals she has no intention of returning to the Island, though a haunting vision of Claire indicates she may have no choice.

16 scripts were submitted for the sixth episode. During the voting for the episode 6 centric, Sayid received the most votes and was selected as this episode's centric. Submissions for episode 6 scripts opened on August 12, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on August 19, 2008. On August 24, the script The Art of Deception (by mreko) was announced as the winner. Betwixt the Devil and the Deep Sea, No Matter the Cost, The Treehouse and Cat and Mouse received honorable mentions.

Too Close to the Mark[]

Too Close to the Mark is the seventh episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on September 5, 2008. After an attack of the Monster at the Barracks claims lives, Sawyer's interrogation of Bergson intensifies as he attempts to extract answers from him. Bergson reveals that the only way to rescue the Island is to destroy the rig, but that will result in the death of the person who does it. Locke ventures to Jacob's cabin with Juliet for answers, but discovers that the entire area has been destroyed. Flashbacks reveal that Hibbs, Bergson and Sawyer ran the the Tampa Job, but that Sawyer got conned by Hibbs after Sawyer refused to stay away from Jillian Birch, the sister of Kenneth Birch, Hibbs' silent partner.

13 scripts were submitted for the seventh episode. During the voting for the episode 7 centric, Juliet and Sawyer tied for the most votes. Accordingly, submissions were to use either of these characters as the centric. Submissions for episode 7 scripts opened on August 24, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on August 31, 2008 and will continued until September 5, 2008. On this date Too Close to the Mark (by Nick67) was announced as the winner. Nick67 thereby became the first contestant to win twice. Un Bel Di Vedremo, Den of Thieves, The Basement and Home Is Where The Heart Is received honorable mentions.

The Greatest of All Games[]

The Greatest of All Games is the eighth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on September 21, 2008. Widmore needs Jacob to convince Sayid that he is telling the truth, but Jacob refuses to talk. Widmore, fueled by both this and revenge, must force Jacob to cooperate. Eventually, Jacob gives Sayid a devastating psychic message. Kenneth Birch then helps Sayid escape, with Aaron. Meanwhile, Jack and Walt make a trip to Ogygia. In flashbacks, we learn that Widmore was Ben's predecessor as leader of the Others, until Jacob forced Widmore to leave the Island via the Orchid to prevent the DHARMA Initiative from re-discovering it. Widmore resents Jacob and Ben for this, and this is why he is trying so desperately to return.

12 scripts were submitted for the eight episode. Being the episode before the hiatus, there was no poll to decide the centric character of this episode and instead it was a judges choice. Alongside the reveal of the episode seven winner, it was revealed that Charles Widmore would be the focus of episode. The judges' challenge for this episode was to answer five unanswered questions from prior episodes. Unlike other rounds, writers were given a 5 page extension to the usual 20 page limit. Submission for episode 8 scripts opened on September 5, 2008 and continued until September 15, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on September 15, 2008 and continued until September 21, 2008. On this date, The Greatest of All Games by sir692 was announced as the winner. The Better to See You With and A Penny for Your Thoughts received honorable mentions.

A sub-contest was held alongside Episode 8. This contest asked contestants to submit art to be included on the hypothetical DVD box set for season 5. Out of the 7 entries submitted, NickN67's sample was voted as the winner.

Powerless[]

Powerless is the ninth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on October 5, 2008. On Ogygia, after passing out, Walt receives a cryptic vision from Shannon and his father, warning him that he is in danger and must return to the Island. While Proci questions Walt, Penny and Ben face one another with guns. In flashbacks, Walt receives treatments from the Others in Room 23 that enhanced his nascent psychic powers, allowing him to visit Shannon on multiple occasions and see future events. He felt resonsible for Shannon's death after using astral projection to see it happen, making him feel 'powerless'. After leaving the Island, Walt and Michael separated after Walt used his empathy powers to see that Michael killed Ana-Lucia and Libby. Weeks before the present events Jeremy Bentham told him to go back to the Island, and several hours before the present events that Kenneth Birch forced him to travel with Ben to Ogygia.

8 scripts were submitted for the ninth episode. Being the episode after the hiatus, there was no poll to decide the centric character and instead the contestants could choose a centric for their own episodes. Submission for episode 9 scripts began on September 21, 2008 and continued until October 1, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on that date and continued until October 5, 2008. On this date, Powerless (by johno1995) was selected as the winner. A Boy and His Dog, Us and Them and Thicker Than Water received honorable mentions.

Curiouser[]

Curiouser is the tenth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on October 20, 2008. On the Island, Locke, Miles, Charlotte, Juliet and Daniel find a delerious Claire in the rubble that once was Jacob's cabin. Charlotte convinces the group that they can only cure her at Room 23 and Locke reveals he can bring them there using the Elizabeth. But Charlotte has her own ulterior motive for the journey. In flashbacks, under the guidance of Matthew Abaddon, Charlotte slowly realizes that she is the only daughter of Jacob, and also witnesses an unsuccessful attempt by Ethan Rom, Richard Alpert and Daniel to retrieve Jacob from the timestream.

9 scripts were submitted for the tenth episode. During the voting for the episode 10 centric, Charlotte and Sun tied for the most votes. Entrants were allowed to choose either as their centric. Submissions for episode 10 scripts opened on October 6, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on October 13, 2008 and continued until October 20, 2008. On this date, Curiouser (by Mark Monack) was selected as the winner. Mark Monack thus became the second contestant to win twice. The Horse of the Bad Man, People Always Get Fooled, Those Without a Purpose and A New Vision of Reality were given Honorable Mention.

Why We Fight[]

Why We Fight is the eleventh episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on November 3, 2008. In flashback, we learn that Ben killed Kenneth Birch's sister and then convinced Birch that Charles Widmore had done it, thus (apparently) securing his loyalty. In Los Angeles, Birch finds Desmond and Sun and sends them to London to rendezvous with Charles. On Ogygia, Ben's plan to kill Penny goes awry when Sayid appears unexpectedly. Ben kills Proci by mistake before Sayid captures him. The Oceanic Six (except Sun), a captive Ben, Penny, Calypso, and Calypso's two children then board a plane piloted by Frank to go to Tunisia and a mysterious DHARMA Initiative station there, for reasons Sayid has yet to explain...

11 scripts were submitted for the eight episode. During the voting for the episode 11 centric, Ben received the most votes. Entrants were also required to introduce Frank Lapidus into the eleventh episode. Submissions for episode 11 scripts opened on October 20, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on October 27, 2008 and continued until November 3, 2008. On this date, Why We Fight (by mreko) was selected as the winner. mreko thus became the third contestant to win twice. The Castle Crumbles, Some Rules Are Meant to be Broken, and The Choice were given Honorable Mention.

A Matter of Perspective[]

A Matter of Perspective is the twelfth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on November 17, 2008. Claire learns that the Island has been trying to kill her, but her father has been protecting her. Claire decides to take destiny in her own hands and save the Island by blowing up the oil rig that has pierced its core. Off the Island, Widmore and Abaddon threaten to have Charlotte killed if Jacob does not live up to his promise to return them.

8 scripts were submitted for the twelfth episode. During the voting for the episode 12 centric, Claire received the most votes. Entrants were also required to explain the nature of the breach and its effect on the Island, and to have either Bernard, Charlotte, Claire, Daniel, Juliet, Miles, Richard, Rose, or Sawyer sacrifice themselves by manually setting the oil rig to explode and dying in that explosion. To accomplish this, the page limit for this episode was increased from 20 to 25 pages. Submissions for episode 12 scripts opened on November 3, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on November 10, 2008 and continued until November 17, 2008. On this date, A Matter of Perspective (by drexelbond) was selected as the winner. There Will be Blood, Dawn of Our Species, and The Five People You Meet in Hell were given Honorable Mentions.

The Box[]

The Box is the thirteenth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on December 1, 2008. Aaron, a captive Ben, Frank, Hurley, Jack, Kate, Penny, Sayid, and Walt travel to Tunisia, locate the "Link", a DHARMA Initiative station located off the Island. There, Kenneth Birch, Sun and Desmond confront them. But before Birch can exact revenge against Ben, and to everyone's surprise, Juliet appears. In flashes, Hurley investigates Libby's past, and finally achieves some measure of closure following her death.

6 scripts were submitted for the thirteenth episode. During the voting for the episode 13 centric, Hurley received the most votes. Submissions for episode 13 scripts opened on November 17, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on November 24, 2008 and continued until December 1, 2008. On this date, The Box (by Dominick Torro) was named the winner. There's A Rebel In Doom Squad Six and A Way of Course-Correcting were named as honorable mentions.

A Wrench in the Works[]

A Wrench in the Works is the fourteenth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on December 15, 2008. On the Island, Widmore, Abaddon and some enforcers arrive, months before they left, re-enacting the vision Jacob gave Sayid! They have lost several men in the journey, apparently due to a scheme concocted by Abaddon and Jacob. After Widmore and Locke reach an accord, he leaves the Island and offers to take Juliet with him. She initially declines, but is then persuaded to go by Sawyer who says that she must go to throw a wrench in Widmore's plans. In flashforwards, Locke keeps Juliet too busy to visit her sister Rachel and nephew Julian. When she finally gets the chance, Rachel has died of her cancer.

10 scripts were submitted for the fourteenth episode. During the voting for the episode 14 centric, Juliet received the most votes. Submissions for episode 14 scripts opened on December 1, 2008. Voting for the best episode began on December 8, 2008 and continued until December 15, 2008. On this date, A Wrench in the Works (by HeDoesntLoveYourRobot) was named the winner. HeDoesntLoveYourRobot thus became the fourth contestant to win twice. The Other Side and Hold Your Breath were named as honorable mentions.

New set contest[]

The Headlong Hall

A sub-contest was held alongside episode 14. The premise was to create a new set to be introduced in the season finale. Entrants had to name the set, state the general location, a general description, when the location was constructed (within Lost's timeline), and who controls the set. Submissions for the new set contest opened on November 30, 2008. 9 set designs were submitted. Voting for the best new set began on December 8, 2008 and continued until December 15, 2008. The Headlong Hall (by chubbychickenz) received the most votes. Entrants will be required to include this set design into the finale.

The Headlong Hall, also known as the Temple, is a large stone building residing in a small crater surrounded by mountains that line the east coast of the Island. Just beyond this crater resides the Four-toed statue. The DHARMA Initiative built this building as a safe place where anyone in danger could flee, and may be a way to help the Oceanic Six arrive safely.

Look Up[]

Look Up is the fifteenth episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on December 27, 2008. When Ji Yeon falls ill, Sun is told the only hope of saving her is killing Ben and returning to the Island. She insists on taking Ben into the Link alone, and shoots Kenneth Montand Birch when he tries to stop her. In the Link -- both in vengeance and to save her daughter -- she strands Ben in the timestream, possibly killing him. She arrives on the Island, at the Headlong Hall, and finds that Jacob is already there. Meanwhile, on the Island, Charles Widmore learns of Birch's death via his own red cube.

During the voting for the episode 15 centric, Sun received the most votes. Submissions for episode 15 scripts opened on December 15, 2008. 6 scripts were submitted. Voting for the best episode began on December 24, 2008 and continued until December 27, 2008 (announced early). On that date, Look Up (by Obi Dan Kenobi) was selected as the winner, with Judge, Jury and Executioner and The Consequence of Choice receiving honorable mentions.

Casting call contest[]

A final sub-contest was held alongside episode 15. In this contest, entrants are to suggest actors to play five recurring characters. The five characters are (in order of appearance in the contest), Simon, Leon Bergson, Proci Hekatoctis, Calypso Hekatoctis and Jacob. Submissions for the casting call contest opened on December 24, 2008. Voting for the winner began on December 29, 2008.

Good Luck, Travel Well (Parts 1 & 2)[]

Good Luck, Travel Well (Parts 1 & 2) was the final two-part episode of the Righter Untie! Season Five Writing Contest and was selected as the winning script on January 21, 2009. After Sun sabotages the Link by taking Ben and a cube, Jack and the remaining evacuees must find another way to go back to the Island. In light of Ben’s disappearance, some of the evacuees question whether they really do have to return at all. However, something unexpected changes all that, putting many lives in jeopardy. On the Island, Matthew Abaddon leads Daniel and Charlotte towards the Orchid in order to stop the output of deadly radiation. Meanwhile, Miles receives a message that takes him and Sawyer on a mission of their own. Flashbacks detail a long kept secret from Jack’s past.

Submissions for scripts for the final episode opened on December 29, 2008. The finale is to be a double-episode, meaning that the script must be styled as two episodes to be run sequentially. 8 scripts were submitted. In addition, entrants will be required to introduce the set selected as the winner of the new set contest. Voting for the best finale episode began on January 12, 2009 and continued until January 21, 2009. On that date, Good Luck, Travel Well (Parts 1 & 2) (by Christopher) was named the winner. This makes Christopher the fourth and final contestant to win twice. Behind the Moon, Beyond the Rain, Triage and the Windmill and This Side of Paradise (Parts 1 & 2) received Honorable Mention.
