• The Others are aware of Jack's father's saying - they had television footage prepared of this, rather than news footage of Bush's victory or Reeve's death.
• Ben (or another Other) is a Red Sox fan and taped the final game, and the tape was later conveniently used to convince Jack that contact with the outside world was not impossible.
• Christian and Jack, said "That's the reason the Sox won't win the Series" in Outlaws. They blamed it on fate. Since the Sox did win that means that fate can be changed and the universe does not have a way of course-correcting itself and Ms. Hawking was lying because she works for Charles Widmore and wanted to get Desmond to The Island.
