The economist is the unseen employer of Elsa. Sayid was ordered to kill him by Benjamin Linus.

Little is known about the economist, except that he "works in emerging markets." Elsa claims that he is very old fashioned in his business, as evidenced by his use of a pager. She explained that he was an innocent man, but it became clear that he was not (as he hired Elsa to spy on Sayid). According to Sayid, he is also not truly an economist. ("The Economist") Both the economist and Mr. Avellino were on Ben's list of targets for Sayid.

His status is unknown. However, upon killing Ivan Andropov, Sayid was told by Ben that he had successfully completed his mission to kill everyone on the list. Therefore, the Economist is presumably dead or was pardoned from the list by Ben for an unknown reason. ("He's Our You")

  2. Keep the questions open-ended and neutral: do not suggest an answer.
For fan theories about these unanswered questions, see: Economist/Theories
  • Who is he?
  • With Sayid's mission "complete" upon killing Ivan Andropov, is the Economist dead?
  • Does Ben still want Sayid to kill him, or focus on the new person referenced at the end of "The Economist"?
  • Why would he only communicate by pager (apart from trying to trap Sayid)?
