Territory's name
This region was apparently named by Danielle Rousseau, as the region was labeled "Territoire Foncé" on her maps. ("Whatever the Case May Be").
Features
The Black Rock
Danielle Rousseau takes the survivors into the Dark Territory to retrieve dynamite from the Black Rock, a ship unusually located deep in the Island's jungle. ("Exodus, Part 1")
The Monster
The Monster appears to be highly active in this region; it attacked the survivors during their mission to retrieve dynamite from the Black Rock, nearly pulling Locke underground. ("Exodus, Part 2")
The blast door map states contains the phrase, "Primary nexus of Cerberus related activity", in close proximity to the Black Rock. ("Lockdown") Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof confirmed that "Cerberus" is an alias for the the Monster at Comic Con 2007's Lost panel.
The Temple
Rousseau claims that Montand lost his arm in the Dark Territory ("Exodus, Part 1"). Jin sees Montand lose his arm at the Temple ("This Place Is Death"). Thus, the Temple must be within the Dark Territory. Robert also later claims that the Monster is a security system guarding the Temple, and the Monster does indeed pull Montand inside the Temple. This all supports the evidence that the Monster is more active in the Dark Territory region as it uses the Temple as some kind of base.
Before the crash
The Dark Territory is where Danielle Rousseau's science expedition first encountered the Others. Also according to Rousseau this is where her teammates became infected with the the Sickness. One member of Rousseau's team, Montand, lost his arm in the Dark Territory after it was ripped off by the Smoke Monster. The Temple is located inside of the Dark Territory. ("This Place Is Death").
After the crash
The survivors of Flight 815 are known to have visited the Dark Territory on two specific occasions, both times to visit the Black Rock. The size and boundaries of the Dark Territory are unknown, so it possible the survivors may have passed through the region on other occasion.
Season One (Day 44)
- Rousseau led Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley, and Arzt there in order to obtain dynamite from the the Black Rock. ("Exodus, Part 2")
Season Three (Days 88-89)
Locke led Sawyer to the Black Rock in the Dark Territory in order to manipulate him into killing Anthony Cooper. ("The Brig")
Season Five
The science expedition was heading towards the radio tower, led by Jin, when Nadine went missing. The group searched for her in the Dark Territory, and encountered the Monster. The Monster dragged Montand to a temple, and attempted to pull him inside of a cerberus vent. The science crew tried to pull him back, but the Monster ripped off one of his arms, succeeding in dragging Montand into the vent. ("This Place Is Death")
