Theories may be removed if ...
  1. Stated as questions or possibilities (avoid question marks, "Maybe", "I think", etc).
  2. More appropriate for another article.
  3. Illogical or previously disproven.
  4. Proven by canon source, and moved to main article.
  5. Speculative and lacking any evidence to support arguments.
  6. Responding to another theory (use discussion page instead).
  • This does not include responses that can stand alone as its own theory.
  • Usage of an indented bullet does not imply the statement is a response.

The Crash

  • Due to magnetic anomalies of the island, flying vehicles are experiencing serious problems trying to fly over the island. This explains how the drug dealers' plane, Henry Gale's balloon, Oceanic 815 and Naomi's helicopter crashed, and why the freighters' helicopter became unstable.
  • Frank said the helicopter was hit by lightning. Hurley warned Locke about being struck by lightning this episode.
  • The planes and helicopters were not necessarily taken down by the magnetic anomalies... their instruments stopped working, and then as a result of that they went down.
    • Stop working, probably as a result of magnetic anomalies

The Four

Theory 1: Daniel, Miles, Frank Lapidus and Charlotte are "special".

  • The "special people" are not reincarnations. The items Richard shows Locke are not from the past (like those used to test a prospective Dalai Lama, which would imply reincarnation), but the future. The items, such as the "mystery island" comic, future Locke's compass, the Book of Laws Eko gave to future Locke, and the sand from the island are all tests of whether Locke has seen into his future. Further, we know he has because of young Locke's drawing of the monster on his wall - which implies that he has already had a vision of being attacked by the monster in the future. This would indicate that "special" people are able to glimpse the future (i.e. they are not reincarnations). This would explain why Daniel is mysteriously responds emotionally, crying, when he sees the crash of Flight 815, though he isn't yet involved in the mission. Also, this would explain why Miles doesn't leave the island - he knows the Kahana is going to explode - and this may also be how he found the money in Confirmed Dead. Frank Lapidus may have had a premonitions and hence didn't pilot Flight 815. Charlotte may also have these experiences since she seemed to recognize what Miles was talking about when he mentioned her trying to find the island.
  • Abaddon may be involved in tracking down "special people" - since we saw him with Locke in the past and advised him to go on the walkabout, and there is some mystery as to why he chose Frank Lapidus, Miles, Charlotte and Daniel, it is possible that they are also special people.
  • Their "specialness" may have given the Kahana/Widmore knowledge as to how to find the island - through their premonitions - i.e. the island drawing them toward it like it drew Locke through his dreams. This is why Widmore/Abaddon insisted to Naomi that these people - Daniel, Miles, Frank Lapidus and Charlotte, were the right ones for the mission.
  • To support this idea, we have her fascination with the island and the Dharma initiative as evidenced by her chosen career path (which is in historical sociology and timeless human behaviour) and activities in Tunisia. Also, note Charlotte's hesitance to discuss with Daniel her strange feelings about the island, saying "Would it make any sense if I told you I'm still looking for where I was born?" Her reluctance to explain herself to Daniel (who is no stranger to weird concepts) could indicate that Charlotte herself feels drawn to the island for reasons she is still unclear about, as Locke was.

Theory 2: Chosen for practical reasons

  • They were all chosen because each of them is the most qualified person in the world in dealing with a specific aspect of the Island. Frank's obsession with 815 makes him the world's top expert on the subject, and similarly Charlotte is an expert on the DHARMA initiative. Miles' psychic powers make him the most suited for dealing with Jacob/island ghosts/the Monster. Daniel has a unique intuitive understanding of physics/electromagnetism.

Sunlight

  • The sunlight doesn't scatter normally because some kind of time distortion happens when light travels to the Island. On the season 3 DVD Extras, while talking about the "Lost time" anagram in Mittelos Bioscience, the writers stated that "the notion of how time relates to the Others and their travels back and forth to the Island is something the show will be exploring very soon".
  • This confirms the Snowglobe Theory:
    • It is possible through the use of very powerful magnetic fields to 'bend light' around an object rendering it invisible. This would explain why the Island cannot be seen by people outside of the Island. The magnetism would mess with their compasses, leading them around it.
  • The sunlight "falls" straight down, exactly like the rain.
  • Daniel notices that "light scatters different here"... this is due to the "Faraday Effect", in which a magnetic field will rotate a polarized light source. The strong magnetic field in the Island has this effect on the light. This could explain why the Island is "invisible" to outsiders...light scattered through the earth's atmosphere is (partially) polarized...if the light being reflected by the Island is rotated by the magnetic field, then its possible that the Island is difficult to view until you are within the range of the magnetic field. This is also why the sky turned "purple" during the discharge event (due to light scattering effects). Also, a strong magnetic field can rotate radio waves as well. This effect is how the Looking Glass station "jammed" radio signals off the Island.
    • The Faraday Effect doesn't work if there is only a magnetic field. It also needs to be in a dielectric medium so it doesn't apply in this situation. Even so, sunlight is unpolarised anyway so the Faraday Effect would make no difference on sunlight. Also, changing the polarisation of light won't effect how it's scattered off non-polarising materials.
    • Faraday Rotation occurs in the interstellar medium and is an important tool for astronomy in measuring magnetic fields. Radio waves passing through the Earth's ionosphere are subject to Faraday rotation. An alternate form of the equation exists without a dielectric solid or liquid. Sunlight is partially polarized due to the scattering from the earth's atmosphere (also why the sky is blue). This is why polarized sunglasses and camera lenses cut out glare (although most is from reflected surfaces). It is suspected that insects use the polarization of sunlight when it hits at certain angles of the atmosphere for navigation.
  • Light scatters differently on the Island because the Island is actually made of mirror-matter - that is, all of the molecules are of the opposite "handedness" on the Island.
