The day following the completion of the Sri Lanka Video, coded communications between Malick and Rachel Blake began to appear on The official Lost Experience weblogs (Speaker, The Other Girl and Lost Ninja).

They were parts of a continuing conversation between the two regarding the setup of a meeting, most likely between Blake and Alvar Hanso.

The messages serve as an explanation for how Rachel managed to escape Sri Lanka after seemingly being attacked and captured in her video. They also explain where she went next (back to the United States), and why she then traveled to Narvik (to see Alvar Hanso in the Norway video).

Prelude Message

Badtwin
The book used for the book cipher.

On August 11th, during a DJ Dan live broadcast, Malick phoned in and stated the following numbers would correspond as part of a book cipher to a work that was "appropriate considering the controversy raging around you":

240 249 68 61 37 118 75 233 231 150 36 184 157 51 144 180 253 50 173 30 222 192 13 82 1

Solution

The book Malick used for the cipher is Bad Twin by Gary Troup, and using the first letter from the page numbers he quotes creates:

I know where he is - I can set it up.

Message 1, received September 9th.

The first message was emailed to Speaker by an unknown source, who posted it on his blog on September 9th with a filename Ironman_1. The message is from Rachel to Malik.

Swinging the image around makes the following (assuming it is literally a mirrored image):

Solution

This is a hexadecimal code, a numerical system often used in computing to represent bytes. One must first convert this code into ASCII (for instance using an online converter), another coding system now used widely in computing. The result is the text:

rewsnaymwonkydaerlauoynehterauoyknihtiohwtuobagniklateruoyfinadjdotnillacuoydraehtisithgifehtniuoygnipeeksiecneicsnoc--m

By simply reversing the text the message is revealed as:

M--Conscience is keeping you in the fight, is it? Heard you call into DJ Dan. If you're talking about who I think you are, then you already know my answer.

Message 2

Lncodemail
Message 2, received September 10th (rotated and flipped show encryption clearly).

The second message was emailed to Lost Ninja who posted it on his blog on September 10th ([1]).

Solution

The image must first be rotated by 180 degrees and then flipped horizontally to show legible characters. This gives the code:

zt == zo yjoml oy
d gsot yp dsu. ejsyrbrt vpmdvormvr zo jsbr esd nio;y pm gsi;yu rwio[,rmy/ zyjod
od s ,syyrt pg fiyu/ z;pus;yu/// zd[rslomh pg ejovj. zo

epmfrt/// fof fr zxu;bs jsbr dp,ryjomh yp fp eoyj yjsyz zfp upi lmpe ejsy
d nrvp,r pg jo,z

The code is actually a keyboard version of a shift cipher. The characters featured need to be moved one key left on a standard keyboard. For example, V becomes C, and P becomes O, so with a code such as vpmdvormvr, the result is conscience. Note that "z" equals the SHIFT key also, making the code actually quite intricate as it is as though the message was completely typed using the code. The full decoded message is:

R -- I think it's fair to say, whatever conscience I have was built on faulty equipment. This is a matter of duty. Loyalty... Speaking of which, I've been troubled by the very recent disappearance of an old friend, de Zylva. We all saw your Sri Lanka video. You were captured at the end, and yet, there you were, blasting those Lost producers in San Diego not a week later. And, I have to wonder... did de Zylva have something to do with that? Do you know what's become of him?

The third message was emailed to The Other Girl who posted it on her blog on September 11th ([2]). The attachment was a Microsoft Word document ([3]) which reads:

Solution

This code actually uses the octal numerical system (a base-8 code using digits 0-7), which in computing is sometimes used instead of hexadecimal.

When translated into text (simply using an online converter), the message reads:

I knew you were behind that. I just knew. He never told me, you know?

When I hit the ground I was sure I was dead. The camera was broken, they were dragging me to my feet... and then a burst of gunfire in the air. These were SCIENTISTS, unarmed. They hit the ground. But not Mittelwerk. He kept coming until de Zylva turned the shots in his direction. Once Mittelwerk was face down on the ground, de Zylva grabbed my hand and we were gone. With the camera.

He didn't talk. He said he was de Zylva, that was it. We knew Mittelwerk was already in pursuit, but we stuck to tunnels that had been dug out during various wartimes. We had some close calls. The goal was the American embassy in Colombo, but when we got there, we knew that was impossible. It was being watched -- the airport, too. de Zylva said The Hanso Foundation had too much influence in Colombo to take the risk.

And, then, they caught wind of us again. We knew we could be caught at any second, and the only important thing was that video. EVIDENCE of Mittelwerk's world-wide decimation plot. I'd planned for this. All I needed was a secure, high-speed connection. The Hanso goons knew it too. They surrounded the place while I was uploading. We barricaded ourselves, de Zylva knew an escape route. I barely got out, made my way to a friend of de Zylva's who could get me to India. I swear, I waited for de Zylva. But he never came.

I'm so sorry.

Written by Blake, the message describes what happened to Blake after the conclusion of her video which clearly showed her being captured by Hanso Foundation Scientists, a matter raised by Malick in the second message. The message mentions a man known only as de Zylva who hadn't been mentioned until these communiques began.

Solution

This code is a Vigenère's cipher, once notorious for being a tough code to break. However, the code can nowadays be easily broken, and using a Vigenère decoder with a codeword length of 2 will reveal the message to be:

This is not your fault. As you once shouted at the top of your lungs, we've all got "blood on our hands." I just hope my friend is resting easy. Where are you? I'll need you to meet me in Norway.

The message is from Malick to Rachel Blake.

A morse code message was found on Hansoexposed.com on September 13th. ([4])

Solution

The morse code is:

When decoded, this makes:

M -- Wish it were that simple. Fact is, as much as I want to, I still can't trust you. I want to believe you are the man who helped me in Paris, but de Zylva's name was not unknown. You could be Mittelwerk himself, springing a trap under my feet. I need confirmation it's you. I need you to tell me something only you could know.

To fully decrypt the message, this code must now be converted from hexadecimal to text. After doing so (such as with online converters), the message revealed is from Malick:

R -- I respect your caution. Suppose it's warranted, after all you've come through. I can't remember it exactly, but I think when we were in the stairwell in Paris, you muted the mic as I said "Because he wanted me to help you, and I can't question a man who would launch the Mental Health Appeal... to save a loved one." Say what you will about him now, his heart was once in the right place.

Solution

Once again, this is octal code, which when converted to text makes:

"IiY'nCmN"

When the letters are rearranged, this translates as:

"I'm In NYC"

Solution

The final code is arguably the most difficult to break. It involves first converting the binary to hexadecimal and then to ASCII, creating:

Yitto:detotaofmiu4iyhnhtufenr5noey,'lengsPgubobsirtoeMarruetvesuc. ceahchen.toIamniaedtBsn'redtuciaeidm.momsonpwdasHbfeed3aaeteoeiwtedriy7nprrih.

For the final decryption, one must move along the code and take every 12th letter. This means using the code as a continuous script, counting from the end back from the beginning again. When all this is done, the message is finally revealed as:

"You lived in 3 different apartments. Be waiting outside your second at 7:45 PM. I'm sending a car. Hope you remember the brand of iron you hit me with, because that's the code"
